The Shaykh : Then he said: "And she (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) intended to go on a journey, he cast lots among his wives. Then, he would take with him the one who was chosen by the lot.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:112
Agreed upon"
:
Her statement:
When he intended to travel
: Travel. The scholars said in the language: it is leaving the place of residence. Some scholars said: travel is what a person sets out for in terms of provisions and increase, but the first meaning is more correct: that travel is leaving the place of residence, because a person becomes open and expansive and goes out in it. From this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And [by] the morning when it brightens,
[Al-Muddaththir 74:34]
meaning he went out and became apparent. So when a man leaves his place of residence, it is said: he traveled.
Some said in explaining the reason, i.e., the reason for the name of travel: that it is called travel because it reveals the characters of men, i.e., it makes them clear and explicit. Indeed, the character of many people is not apparent except during travel. You find some people, when they travel, serve their companions, cook for them, bring them firewood, and do everything that brings comfort. And some are like a basket with broken straps when they are traveling; from the moment he gets off the car, he is lying on the ground. Yes, and sometimes he says: "Oh so-and-so, bring this, bring this, bring this, make me coffee, make me tea, bring the dates." This is not a person of good character.
He says: I think it is Nafi': "I accompanied Ibn 'Umar to serve him, but he used to serve me", yes. So this travel, in reality, reveals the characters of men. For this reason, "when 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would have someone recommend another, he would say to him: Come, did you travel with him? He said: No. Okay, did you deal with him? He said: No. He said: Then you do not know him", because a person is known through travel and known through dealing.
Okay,
When he intended to travel
the apparent meaning of the hadith is that there is no difference between long and short travel, and that is the case.
And his saying:
He would draw lots among his wives
: means he drew lots among them, whichever one comes out. It seems the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not travel except with one of his wives, and he might have more than one with him, but he must accompany one of them, because there are hidden sunnahs (recommended practices) that only the wives know. So he (may the prayers and blessings of Allah be upon him) loved for his wives to take from him even the sunnahs in travel, so he would go out with them, with one. And how does he draw lots?
It was not specified how he drew lots, but the methods of drawing lots are many. Any method by which one reaches the drawing of lots, one should follow, whether by writing on papers, or placing stones, or placing sticks, or placing rags. The important thing is whatever achieves the drawing of lots, one should follow it.
the one who was chosen by lot went on it with him
Sunan Abi Dawud 2138Sahih (Al-Albani)
And the remaining ones remain.
