Benefits of the Hadith (If one of you wakes up from sleep, he should not dip his hand in the vessel . . . ).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : From this, benefits are derived from this hadith, among which is: that if a person wakes up from sleep, it is not permissible for him to dip his hand in the vessel until he washes it three times, due to the prohibition, and the default ruling regarding a prohibition is that it is forbidden.
And among the benefits is: that it is permissible to dip part of it, based on his saying:
he should not dip his hand فلا يغمس يده
The default ruling for what is attributed to the hand is that it is general for it. When the hand is mentioned in a general sense, it refers to the palm; when it is specified as extending to the elbow, it is limited to that. However, when mentioned generally, it refers to the palm. It is possible to say that we return to the general rule that the prohibited matter includes both its part and its whole, and that dipping part of the hand is like dipping the whole hand. This is the most correct view, because the default ruling for a prohibition is that it encompasses all of the prohibited matter, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity ما نهيتكم عنه فاجتنبوه وما أمرتكم به فاتوا منه ما استطعتم
Sahih Muslim 1337b
Accordingly, the prohibition includes dipping the entire hand or dipping a part of it.
Among the benefits of this hadith is: that it is obligatory to purify what one doubts is ritually impure, based on his saying:
for you do not know where your hands have spent the night. فإنّ أحدكم لا يدري أين باتت يده
Muwatta Malik 2:7
This is based on this reasoning, meaning that his hand may have become contaminated with ritual impurity and he does not know. However, this opinion is weak. Therefore, when this reasoning was adopted by some scholars, others said that the prohibition here is not for the sake of prohibition, but rather for the sake of dislike, because things do not become ritually impure merely by suspicion. But the correct view is that his saying:
he does’ not know where his hand was during the night لا يدري أين باتت يده
Sunan Abi Dawud 103
may be that Satan has tampered with it and thrown dirt and filth into it, and he does not know.
Among the benefits of the hadith is: that it affirms the prophethood of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), because such a matter is not known by sense, but only by revelation.
