Benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And put your trust in Allah, and Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
and rely upon Allah وتوكل على الله
[An-Nisa 4:81]
This is the beginning of the benefits. This is evidence for the obligation of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah). We have mentioned that tawakkul, as we stated in the book of Tawhid, is divided into categories:
The first is the tawakkul of worship, which is a person’s feeling of his need for the One upon whom he relies and his humility before Him. It is not permissible to direct this to anyone other than Allah, and directing it to anyone other than Allah is kufr (disbelief) and shirk (associating partners with Allah), because it is associating with Allah in what He alone deserves. Is it major shirk or minor shirk? It is major shirk.
The second is relying on another person whom you have appointed as your representative. This is permissible, and it has occurred even from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He appointed Urwah ibn al-Ja’d to purchase a sacrificial animal for him, and he had a representative in Khaybar. He also appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to slaughter the remaining sacrificial animals. This is permissible and there is no doubt in it. He also appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib to be his successor in his household when he went to Tabuk. And Musa (peace be upon him) appointed Harun when he went to the Mount and said:
Take my place among my people, do right اخلفني في قومي وأصلح
[Al-A'raf 7:142]
So this is permissible and there is no doubt in it, because it occurred from the Prophets, and because it is one of the contracts, and the original ruling for contracts is permissibility, except for what evidence prohibits.
The third is relying on someone upon whom it is not valid to rely, based on a hidden power that we know has no effect in this reliance. This is shirk, which may be major or minor. For example, the reliance of those who seek nearness to Allah through the dead and believe that there is good in relying on them. These people may reach the level of major shirk, or else their mere reliance on them is shirk and is not permissible.
The fourth is relying on an apparent, effective power, but relying on it not as a representative for him, but as something that is beneficial to him and is the source of his happiness, success, and provision, and the like. This is makruh (disliked) and may reach the level of prohibition, such as a person’s reliance on his salary, his pension, the ministry in which he works, the administration, and the presidency, and the like. This contains a type of feeling of need for this thing and humility before it. Therefore, you will find those afflicted with this type to be those who show favoritism to those they relied upon. They show favoritism to their superiors, such as ministers and others, in matters that are not permissible. As for being polite to them in what is permissible, there is nothing wrong with that. But showing them favoritism in what is forbidden is not permissible. However, this may occur because they feel that they are in need of these people. So the least of its states is dislike, and a person should be dignified and not rely except on his Lord, Glorified and Exalted is He.
Then he said: It is derived from the noble verse that the sufficiency of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is above all sufficiency, due to His saying:
And Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs وكفى بالله وكيلاً
Some scholars have claimed that this construction implies wonder, meaning: How great is the sufficiency of Allah! And put your trust in Allah, so how great is the sufficiency of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He! It is not far-fetched that this form transforms “And Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs” into
And Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs وكفى بالله وكيلاً
It is not far-fetched that the intended meaning is to indicate the exaggeration in His sufficiency, Glorified and Exalted is He. And this is indicated by the saying of the Exalted:
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. وَمَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ
[Al-Talaq: 3]
