And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger and does righteousness - We will give her her reward twice
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
This is the opposite of the first case, as we said: if they commit a clear indecency, the punishment is doubled for them. Allah the Exalted judged them with justice from another aspect, saying:
And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
submits
obeys. However, submission to Allah the Exalted is different from submission to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Submission to Allah is submission through worship, humility, and magnification, while submission to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is submission through the obedience of a wife to her husband; it is not like their submission to Allah Mighty and Majestic:
And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
to Allah through obedience and worship, and to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by fulfilling the rights that are obligatory for a husband over his wife.
And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
and does good.
does good work. Good work is what is pure and correct. Pure and correct means it combines the two fundamental conditions in every act of worship, which are sincerity for Allah and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Every act of worship must have these two conditions. So, if one follows the Messenger but is not sincere for Allah, her prayer is invalid because it is showing off. And if one is sincere for Allah but does not follow the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), her prayer is also invalid, so her worship is invalid, due to the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718b So, student, what are the two fundamental conditions for the validity of worship?
The student: Sincerity and following.
The Shaykh : Yes, so following along with sincerity.
The student: ...
The Shaykh : Yes, so if there is following without sincerity?
The student: It is not accepted.
The Shaykh : It is not accepted. The work is not accepted. Sincerity without following is not accepted; both are necessary. And so, whenever Allah Mighty and Majestic mentions good work, the meaning of "good" is what includes these two fundamental conditions. Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
We will give her her reward twice
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
We will give her.
Why did He not say "We will give her" with a yā' (nū'tīhā)?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : It is the answer to the conditional clause, which is His saying:
whoever submits.
The answer to the conditional clause must be in the jussive mood (mudari majzum), and the verb here is in the jussive mood by the deletion of the weak letter (harf al-'illah). Its original form is "nū'tīhā," but when it was put in the jussive mood, the weak letter was deleted, becoming "nū'tahā." So the meaning of
We will give her.
is "We will give her." Therefore, it took two objects: the first object is
Yes.
ها
and the second is
her reward
We will give her her reward twice
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
, meaning twice the reward of other women. In a reading with the tashdīd (doubled letter) in
she works
and
The student: ...
The Shaykh :he works
and in
We will give her
, meaning and
He will give her
. This reading is "sab'iyah" (sevenfold) according to the author's terminology, and
He will give her
means Allah, and
We will give her
means We. To whom does the pronoun refer? To Allah.
We will give her her reward twice
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
Giving the reward twice is not strange, for Allah the Exalted has established the reward twice in several matters, such as
The student: ...
The Shaykh : No,
Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
[Surah al-Qasas: 54]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that a man from the People of the Book, if he believes in his book and then believes in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), then Allah the Exalted will give him his reward twice. And many of the scholars said regarding His saying:
O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy
[Surah al-Hadid: 28] that this is the reward of this Ummah, doubled compared to others. The important point is that the favor of Allah the Exalted is vast; He may reward the worker with his reward twice for one of the reasons.
The student: ...?
The Shaykh : This is in the hadith.
The student: ...?
The Shaykh : It is the one we recited:
(54) Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend. (55) And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it
[Surah al-Qasas: 54-55].
He says:
" and We have prepared for her a noble provision.
[Al-Ahzab 33:31]
We have prepared
meaning We have prepared for her provision
a provision noble
that is good and abundant." Because generosity in every place is according to its context. The "generous" (karimah) of a sheep means the good, beautiful one with much milk, as in the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
don't pick up (as a share of Zakat) the best of their wealths
Sahih Muslim 19a Here, the meaning of "generous provision" (rizqan kariman) is abundant, good, and beautiful provision. And this is only in Paradise, as the author says,
" as an addition." Then Allah the Exalted said...
