إنماThe student: ...
The Shaykh : Why is it relative?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : Because Allah wants this and other things. The relative is that which is not restricted in reality to this thing, and the real is that which is restricted in reality to this thing. So if I say, "No student pays attention except Khalid," what happens? Is it real or relative? We see: if there is no one else, it is real; if someone else pays attention, it is relative.
The student: ...?
The Shaykh : ... The relative is like this man, for example, who pays attention so much that no one else pays attention, as if I said, "No brave man except Khalid," meaning Khalid ibn al-Walid. Yes, "No brave man except Khalid." What do you say, is it real or relative? No, it is not real, because there are many brave men other than Khalid ibn al-Walid. Yes, "No seal of the prophets except Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." This is real, because there is no seal of the prophets except Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. Clear? Good. Here,
Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity
إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَAllah intends only to remove from you the impurity
إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَFirst: The cosmic will relates to what Allah loves and what He does not love; this is one. The legislative will relates only to what Allah loves. So if I say:
intends
يريدSecond: The cosmic will necessitates the occurrence of the intended thing, and the legislative will does not necessitate the occurrence of the intended thing. So the difference is from two aspects. We now look: the two wills may coexist in something, or both may be absent, or one may exist without the other.
