Tafsir of Surat Saba-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah the Exalted said:
until, when terror is removed from their hearts, they will say [to one another], "What has your Lord said?" حَتَّى إِذَا فُزِّعَ عَنْ قُلُوبِهِمْ قَالُوا مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ
[Saba 34:23]
until حتى
Here, "until" is initial, not final, because "until" can indicate a limit, an beginning, or a cause, and it has multiple meanings. Whoever wishes to understand them should refer to the book *Al-Mughni*, specifically *Al-Mughni al-Labib* by Ibn Hisham (may Allah have mercy on him), as it is beneficial for the student of knowledge. He says:
Until when the terror is removed حَتَّى إِذَا فُزِّعَ
There are two readings:
The terror is removed فُزِّع
and
Terror is inflicted فَزَّع
As the author stated: "Constructed for the agent and the patient,
From their hearts عن قلوبهم
from their hearts, meaning the hearts of creation or the hearts of the angels. There are two opinions among the scholars, and their explanation will follow, if Allah wills.
terror is removed from their hearts فزع عن قلوبهم
[Saba 34:23]
He said: "
The terror was removed from them by permission therein "
Terror is inflicted فَزَّع
and
Terror is removed فُزِع
means to remove the terror. It is not that "faza'a" means to inflict terror, but rather to remove it. It is a verb intended to negate the meaning, as there are verbs intended to negate the meaning, meaning the opposite of that meaning. He said: "
And from their saying: 'He sheared the camel' " What does "qarada" mean? It means to remove the lice from them. Yes... And Allah, you know the camel and the lice on it, it is well known. The lice are well known, you know the camel. The lice are something that is on the skin of the camel, a small insect. Yes, it bites the camel and drinks its blood. It is called locusts? No, no, it is like lice in humans; it is the lice of camels.
The student: It holds on...

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly. If it grips the skin, it does not release it ever, unless you hold it and drag it. In any case, if Allah wills, perhaps we will go out to the open land and see with our own eyes that there are lice on it and show it to you. Now, the important point is that "shearing a camel" does not mean putting lice on it; it means removing them from it.
terror is removed from their hearts ففُزٍّع عن قلوبهم
[Saba 34:23]
or
terror is removed from their hearts فَزَّع عن قلوبهم
[Saba 34:23]
means to remove the terror.
from their hearts عن قلوبهم
The author said: "
By permission therein " meaning in intercession. Accordingly, the pronoun here refers to the one for whom intercession is sought. That is, the distress, anxiety, and sorrow that befell the one for whom intercession is sought, as well as fear and terror, were removed when Allah permitted intercession. The terror was removed from the hearts because relief was near. He said:
until, when terror is removed from their hearts حتى إذا فزع عن قلوبهم
[Saba 34:23]
"
By permission therein "
They will say قَالُوا
Some of them to others, in gladness
"What has your Lord said?" قَالُوا مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ
[Saba 34:23]
meaning in intercession.
They will say قَالُوا
The true word, meaning that permission has been granted therein.
and He is the Most High وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ
Above His creation by compulsion.
the Magnificent الْكَبِيرُ
The Mighty. Pay attention. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) has informed us that the pronoun in
By them بهم
refers to the one for whom intercession is sought. For the one for whom intercession is sought, before the intercession, terror and fear befall him from his sins or otherwise. When permission is granted for intercession, the terror is removed, and they say: What did Allah say? He says that: Some of them say to others
They said, “The truth” قالوا الحق
meaning they said the true word.
Come الحق
means that which is established and consistent with its place. And it has been mentioned to us previously that the truth in news is truthfulness, and the truth in judgments is justice, as Allah the Exalted said:
And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلًا لا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
[Al-An'am: 115]. Now, this is the view of the author, that the pronoun in "their hearts" refers to the one for whom intercession is sought, and that "faza'a" means the removal of terror, which is fear, by permission of intercession. Yes, the context does not object to this. However, it is established in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the intended meaning is other than that, and that it refers to the angels who are with Allah. When Allah speaks with revelation, they faint. When they faint, the terror is removed from their hearts, meaning the terror is removed from them. Then they ask one another: What did Allah say? And it is said: "
He said the truth, and He is the Most High, the Great " When the Sunnah comes with an explanation of the Qur'an, it is more appropriate. However, we have previously stated that if the Qur'an indicates several meanings that do not contradict each other, it is to be understood as encompassing all the meanings, because it is broader and greater than what human thought can reach. My thought may reach one thing, another thought may reach another thing, and a third thought may reach a third thing, and the verse encompasses all these meanings, so it is to be understood as such. But if it does not encompass more than one meaning, then it must be understood as what the evidence has established. Some scholars said: "Until when the terror is removed from their hearts at death" It is not on the Day of Resurrection at the time of intercession, but when the terror is removed from their hearts at death. But this is weak, even if it may apply, for the terror is removed from the heart at death and one acknowledges the truth. So when Pharaoh drowned, what did he say?
until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims." حَتَّى إِذَا أَدْرَكَهُ الْغَرَقُ قَالَ آمَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلَّا الَّذِي آمَنَتْ بِهِ بَنُوا إِسْرَائِيلَ وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
[Yunus: 90] And Allah the Exalted said:
And when they saw Our punishment, they said," We believe in Allah alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him." فَلَمَّا رَأَوْا بَأْسَنَا قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ وَكَفَرْنَا بِمَا كُنَّا بِهِ مُشْرِكِينَ
[Ghafir: 84] But this meaning is weak. The verse revolves around what the author said and what is established by the authentic hadith. It clearly indicates what came in the authentic hadith, and what the author mentioned is possible and the verse does not object to it.
