But whatever thing you spend
وَمَا أَنفَقْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ [Saba 34:39]
in good
He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers."
فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ [Saba 34:39]
He will replace it for the person, meaning He provides for his family, meaning from the provision of Allah. Good.
not
ما
This is a conditional sentence, and the verb of the condition is
spend
أنفق
and its response is
He will replace it
فهو يخلفه
. It is connected with the particle *fa* because it is a nominal sentence, and the response of a condition is connected with *fa* in seven places. He tells us to recite for us, brother Abd al-Rahman, the verse that... in it.
The student: I do not memorize it.
The Shaykh : What you memorize, yes,
The student: ....
The Shaykh : and with what, yes.
The student: ...
The Shaykh : And with what, no, here it is in order.
The student: ....
The Shaykh : Yes, I heard, O Abd al-Rahman, yes,
“Nominal, imperative, with a static word, with *ma*, with *qad*, with *lan*, and with execution”. Which of the seven categories is this verse from? Nominal. And His saying, the Exalted:
But whatever thing you spend
وَمَا أَنفَقْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ [Saba 34:39]
means Allah
will replace it
يُخْلِفُهُ
means He brings its replacement. Know that there is a difference between *yakhluful* (triliteral) and *yukhlifu* (quadriliteral). *Yakhluful* means to replace another, as Allah the Exalted said regarding Moses when he asked to be a successor to Aaron:
Take my place among my people, do right
اخْلُفْنِي فِي قَوْمِي وَأَصْلِحْ [Al-A'raf 7:142]
So the one who gives a successor is the giver of the successor, and the one who replaced another is the replacer. Pay attention to the difference between the triliteral and the quadriliteral. What does the triliteral mean? It means he replaced another. And the quadriliteral means he gave a successor. From this is the hadith of Abu Salama, yes, he said:
and give me a successor in my offspring
واخلفني في عقبه
And the hadith of Umm Salama, she said:
“And give me a successor better than him”. So this hadith agrees with the speech entirely. The hadith of Umm Salama:
No servant is struck by a calamity and says: O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me a successor
ما من عبد يصاب بمصيبة فيقول : الله اللهم أجرني في مصيبتي واخلفني
She did not say *wa-akhluf* (triliteral) but
give me something better than it in exchange for it," ' Allah will give him reward for affliction, and would give him something better than it in exchange.
واخلفني خيراً منها إلا آجره الله في مصيبته وأخلف له خيراً منها Sahih Muslim 918b. Good. Is this here from the quadriliteral or the triliteral? From the quadriliteral.
so He will replace it for him
فهو يخلفه
means He gives what is a successor to him. And His saying:
and whatever you spend
وما أنفقتم
means we spent, or rather, we. The author, may Allah have mercy on him, qualified it by saying:
“And whatever you spend in good”. And this qualification by the author is indicated by multiple verses, as He said, the Exalted:
And whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves
وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَلِأَنفُسِكُمْ [Al-Baqarah 2:272]
And whatever you spend of good - it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لا تُظْلَمُونَ
[Al-Baqarah: 272]. And there is much of this, because whoever spends in other than good, the replacement is not guaranteed for him. But whoever spends in good, the replacement is guaranteed for him. Good. This includes obligatory expenditures, such as a person spending on his wife, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, and the like. It also includes spending in zakah, because it is the mother of all expenditures, because spending in zakah is one of the pillars of Islam. It includes spending in jihad in the path of Allah. It includes spending in the causes of good, such as being kind to people and the like. And His saying:
But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it
وما أنفقتم من شيء فهو يخلفه [Saba 34:39]
Is this replacement in quantity or in quality? Meaning, does Allah, Glorified and Exalted, give you a replacement in quantity, so if you spend ten, He gives you ten? Or in quality, meaning the remainder, Allah descends blessing upon it so that it becomes equivalent to what you spent, added to it? The apparent meaning is that it includes... that Allah replaces it, giving you a replacement in quantity, so if you spend ten, Allah opens the door of provision and gives you ten. Or it is a replacement in quality, so if you spend ten from a hundred and ninety remain, then these ninety stand in the place of the hundred, or more, due to the blessing that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, sends down. For this reason, it came in the authentic hadith:
so He will replace it for him
فهو يخلفه
He said:
and He is the best of providers.
وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ [Al-Mu'minun 23:72]
better
خير
. Its original form is *Akhayr* because it is a name of superlative, but the hamza was deleted for ease due to its frequent use. And
providers
الرازقين
the providers. How does he say
the best of providers
خير الرازقين
when the one who provides sustenance and gives sustenance is Allah? We say: Because other than Allah provides, but it is limited provision. It is said: He provides for his family. Allah the Exalted said:
And when [other] relatives and orphans and the needy are present at the [time of] division, then provide for them [something] out of the estate and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.
وَإِذَا حَضَرَ الْقِسْمَةَ أُوْلُوا الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَامَى وَالْمَسَاكِينُ فَارْزُقُوهُمْ مِنْهُ وَقُولُوا لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا
[An-Nisa: 8]. So provision is from Allah and from others, but from Allah it is comprehensive and general, and from others it is deficient and specific. So the person is, as the author, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
“It is said that a person provides for his family”, meaning he gives to them. But the giving of a person to his family, or the provision of other than his family, is from where? From the provision of Allah. If Allah had not given him, he would not have given to others. So the meaning returns to: for whom is the provision? For Allah, Glorified and Exalted. Yes.
and He is the best of providers.
وهو خير الرازقين [Al-Mu'minun 23:72]
.
