26 But you are astonished and they mock. And when they are reminded, they do not remember. And when they see a sign, they mock. And they say, "This is nothing but clear sorcery." If we die and become dust and bones, will we really be resurrected? And our former fathers? Say, "Yes, and you will be humiliated." Then it will be but one cry, and then they will be looking. And they will say, "Oh, our misery! This is the Day of Reckoning. This is the Day of Decision about which you used to lie. Gather those who wronged and their companions and what they used to worship besides Allah, and guide them to the path of the Blazing Fire. And stand them up, for they will be questioned. What is wrong with you that you do not help one another? But they will be submissive today.

The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah the Exalted said:
But you wonder, while they mock,
[As-Saffat 37:12]
In this verse, there are two readings. To which pronoun does it refer?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : To the opening (fathah).
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, this is the correct opinion. Now, if it refers to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), is it a real astonishment or a metaphorical one?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : The correct view is that it is real, and that it is like the other attributes. If someone says, "Astonishment is a state that befalls a person when something occurs to him," how can Allah be described with it?

The Shaykh : We say that this type of astonishment you mentioned does not apply to Allah. What is the evidence that it is impossible for Allah?
The student: ...
The Shaykh : Now, like the guidance of Allah through astonishment, which is indicated by the name.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, I am saying, give me an example of astonishment.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : ...This is astonishment. Now, the astonishment of denial, this is from the polytheists. The astonishment of denial that is from Allah.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : This is where someone might say, "To whom is the astonishment attributed?" This verse:
But you wonder, while they mock,
[As-Saffat 37:12]
This is the astonishment of denial. His saying:
And when they see a sign, they ridicule
[As-Saffat 37:14]
What is meant by the sign?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, what is meant by the sign?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Only
The student: ...

The Shaykh : But is the meaning one specific sign or any sign?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And what is your evidence that the meaning is any sign?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, brother.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : An indefinite noun in the context of a condition, and an indefinite noun in the context of a condition implies generality. As for the author's mention of the splitting of the moon, that is merely for illustration.
