The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Indeed, it is a tree that grows out of the bottom of the Hellfire, whose fruit is like the heads of devils.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Now, His saying, Mighty and Majestic:
Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire, إنها شجرة تخرج في أصل الجحيم
[As-Saffat 37:64]

It is derived from this verse and the one following it that the tree of Zaqqum is foul in its origin, as He said, “grows out of the bottom of the Hellfire.” That which is foul in its origin is also foul in itself, for it is customary that a plant is like its soil, and likewise like its water.
Among its benefits is the clarification of the power of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in that He created this tree in the midst of the fire, even though it is known that fire burns trees. But Allah is Able to do all things.
be coolness and safety upon Abraham." كوني بردا وسلاما على إبراهيم لم
[Al-Anbya 21:69]
, it did not burn him; rather, it was coolness and peace for him.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that this tree spreads, either its branches, as the author said, or its species, throughout the entire fire. For Allah informed us that the people of the fire eat from it, and it is known that the fire has levels, some lower than others. It follows from this that this tree must either have its branches spread out, or its species present, in all of the fire.
Among the benefits of His saying:
Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils. طلعها كأنه رؤوس الشياطين
[As-Saffat 37:65]

Among them is that one of the purposes of simile, which is called by rhetoricians “disparagement” (taqbih), is to compare a thing to something that is psychologically repulsive, even if it is not known through the senses, as He said:
as if it was heads of the devils. كأنه رؤوس الشياطين
[As-Saffat 37:65]

Among its benefits is that the heads of devils are detested and considered ugly, for He compared the ugly thing to them. A simile is the attribution of a thing to something higher than it in the attribute by which it is attributed, because the thing compared is lower than the thing it is compared to.
Now, among the benefits of the verse is the affirmation that devils have heads, and this is indeed the case, for devils have heads.
Among its benefits is the refutation of those who say that devils and angels and jinn are the forces of evil, angels being the forces of good, and devils and jinn being the forces of evil, and that there are no bodies. The point of indication is that He affirmed that devils have heads, and this cannot be the case with abstract matters, which are forces.
Among its benefits is the misguidance of those who rely on reason to affirm or deny things, for relying on reason leads a person to reject what is established in the Book and the Sunnah for the sake of what he claims to be reason.
