The Use of Jinn by Fortune-Tellers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some people whom Allah has afflicted with jinn go to fortune-tellers, even though these fortune-tellers prevent the jinn from harming these people, whether by killing them or by restraining them. What is your opinion on this?

Answer:
All of this is not permissible, because fortune-tellers use the devils. Even in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, a fortune-teller had a companion from among the jinn, called a fortune-teller, who had a chief from among the jinn, a companion who would come to him and inform him: such and such happened in al-Hasa, such and such happened in Madinah, such and such happened in Sham, such and such happened in Egypt. The devils pass news among themselves: so-and-so was killed, so-and-so died, a coup occurred in such and such a place, such and such happened. Thus, the devils pass news among themselves. The ignorant person thinks that this fortune-teller, or this soothsayer, knows the unseen, whereas it is the devils who inform him of some news. He then appears to people as if he has information, and that he has information about the unseen, and that he is aware of such and such, and that he is aware of such and such.
He may also use some other devils who have power and authority from among the kings of the devils and their chiefs. They bring the devil who has possessed the woman or the man, or who has done something to him of the things that devils do. They say to him: if this human pleases them, if he pleases them by worshipping them instead of Allah, or slaughtering for them, or making a vow for them, or worshipping them by prostrating to them, or by other means, if he pleases them, they may summon the devil who is under their command. They say: either you do such and such, or we will kill you, or we will imprison you, or we will do such and such to you. So he abandons his ugly actions in order to obey his masters from among the devils and the chiefs.
So he warns against benefiting people through these evil, clearly shirky methods. This is not an excuse, and it is never permissible to visit these people. Even if it were the case that some people benefited from them, the benefit to some people through the path of shirk is not an excuse. Those who worship the jinn may benefit from the jinn, but their harm is greater. The jinn may bring them things; they may bring them dirhams; they may bring them perfume that they have stolen; they may bring them sheep that they have stolen; they may bring them things. This is the capability of those who worship the jinn and take them as gods alongside Allah. We ask Allah for safety.
Even the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance were delivered to the idols. The devils would enter the insides of the idols and speak to these worshippers of other than Allah. They would burden them with things and address them with things, saying such and such happened. They might address them in a language they did not know, thereby enticing them to shirk and calling them to shirk. We ask Allah for safety.
