Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “He created you from a single soul,” meaning Adam, “then made from it his spouse,” Eve, “and sent down for you from the livestock”

Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said: [An-Nisa 4:1] The address here is to the children of Adam. That is, "O children of Adam." And he is Adam. [Az-Zumar 39:6] The description of Adam's creation is that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) created him from dust. This dust became clay by the permission of Allah, and it remained until it became like pottery, having a sound when struck. Then Allah created Adam from it. After He created Adam's body, He breathed into him the soul, so he became a living, well-proportioned human being. This is the first creation of man, as indicated by the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As for the monkeys who claim that the origin of man is a monkey, we accept that for them. But as for us, we are—praise be to Allah—from the children of Adam, human beings. Allah (the Exalted) created our father with His hands, taught him the names of all things, and made His angels prostrate to him. As for them, they have what they love. If they wish to return themselves to that, yes.
[Az-Zumar 39:6] This is for the sake of sequence with a delay, because the creation of this spouse was later than the creation of Adam. Indeed, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, kept him for a period until He knew that he needed a wife to find tranquility in her. So Allah created for him a wife and made this wife from Adam’s soul. And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding women: Sahih al-Bukhari 5185, 5186 implies that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. And Allah is Able to do all things; He can create a human being without a wife, and even without a husband, for Eve was created without a mother or a father. And His saying: [Az-Zumar 39:6] does not contradict what Allah the Exalted mentioned in another verse: [Al-A'raf 7:189], because the conjunction “and” indicates pure aggregation and does not imply sequence, or does not necessitate sequence. It does not necessitate sequence. So when another verse comes that explicitly states sequence, the verse containing the conjunction indicating pure aggregation is interpreted as what? As sequence. That is, the precedence of one thing over another in mention, even if by the conjunction “and,” implies that this is the original rule. Therefore, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approached al-Safa when he came to perform sa’y, he recited: [Al-Baqarah 2:158] “I begin with what Allah began with,” so he began with al-Safa. This indicates that what is preceded in mention is prior to what follows it in rank, time, or place, according to what the situation requires. But this is not necessary; what comes after the conjunction may precede what comes before it, and this is not considered a contradiction. But in His saying: [Az-Zumar 39:6] we cannot say that the making here was before the creation of Adam. And His saying: [Az-Zumar 39:6] This is for the beginning, and is it “from it” as in substance, or “from it” as in description?
The student: As in description.
The Shaykh : The apparent meaning is both, because she was created from Adam and is like Adam as well, so she is of his kind and is also from him in substance, so she is a part of him and a piece of him. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and informed them that Fatimah is a piece of him. Yes. He says:[Az-Zumar 39:6] The word “spouse” is used for meanings, among which is the species, as He, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: [Sad 38:58] meaning species, and as He, the Exalted, said: [As-Saffat 37:22] meaning their species. The word “spouse” is also used for what is other than the singular, meaning the even number, so it is said: a single and a pair. The word “his spouse” here includes both meanings: she is a species of humans and she is also a pair that makes Adam even after he was single. [Az-Zumar 39:6] This is the beginning of the creation of man. He said: “ [Az-Zumar 39:6] Camels, cattle, and sheep, rams and goats ” The sending down here means creation, because it was attributed to specific entities, namely the livestock. “Livestock” is the plural of “na’am,” like “asbāb” is the plural of “sabab.” And His saying: means eight species. And Allah has clarified these pairs in Surat al-An’am, saying: [Al-An'am 6:143] [Al-An'am 6:144] [Al-An'am 6:144] The total is eight, a male and a female from each of the four species. If you multiply two by four, it becomes eight. [Az-Zumar 39:6] The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “ Of each, a pair, a male and a female, as explained in Surat al-An’am ”
