The questioner : He says, fourthly, I have an uncle who is an employee, and I am always in conflict with him because sometimes he wipes over his forehead and the ghutrah, because he wears the iqal over it, and he does not put his hand under the cap. Is he right or not?
The Shaykh : No, he is not right. Rather, it is obligatory for him to wipe over the head, as Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:6] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe over his entire head, from the front to the back, and then return his hands. However, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), if he had a turban on, would wipe over his forehead and the turban, and would not put his hand under the turban. This is because the turban, as is well known, consists of multiple layers that a person wraps around his head, so removing it involves some difficulty. This is unlike the iqal, the ghutrah, and the cap, for there is no difficulty in putting his hand in and wiping over the head. Therefore, the iqal, the ghutrah, and the cap are not to be compared to the turban over which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe, due to the difference between them.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Yes, some of the qubba'ah are to be compared to it. There are qubba'ah that people wear in the winter that cover the entire head and have a band under the chin.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : There is difficulty in removing these, and then in removing them in the cold after the head has been warmed by them, which would expose one to being affected.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Therefore, it is permissible for a person to wipe over these qubba'ah because of the difficulty involved, the difficulty of removing them and the exposure to illness by taking them off while warm, and then the air hitting him, causing him to be affected.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Yes.
The Shaykh : No, he is not right. Rather, it is obligatory for him to wipe over the head, as Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads
