Discussion regarding the verse: “Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book, who are called to the Book of Allah to judge between them...”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : His saying, Exalted is He:
Do you not consider, [O Muhammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited ألم تر إلى الذين أوتوا نصيبا من الكتاب يدعون
[Ali 'Imran 3:23]
To whom is the address in His saying:
Have you not seen ألم تر
Brother, yes? To the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Is there another aspect?
The student: Everyone to whom the address is applicable,

The Shaykh : Everyone to whom the address is applicable means everyone whom it is correct to address; Allah addresses them with His saying:
Have you not seen ألم تر
And this statement is more general than the first statement.

The Shaykh : Who are they intended to be?
The student: The Jews and the Christians,

The Shaykh : Okay,
a portion نصيبا
here it is an indefinite noun. Is it for diminution or for multiplication?
a portion نصيبا
It indicates diminution, and it may be used, meaning it may be used, to indicate a little. Which is intended here?
The student: The intended meaning is diminution,

The Shaykh : Meaning they were given something of knowledge, a little something. Yes.
Okay, and what is the point of relevance? If I say the intended meaning is diminution, they might say, “By Allah, we have only a little knowledge, and we do not know whether the Book of Allah is truth or not truth?” What is the relevance? I did not understand the question. I will say now: If I say the intended meaning is diminution, how can there be rebuke of them when they have only a little knowledge by which they do not distinguish truth from falsehood? The intent is that they were given a portion, meaning a little of knowledge, that is not sufficient for them in matters of their religion and worldly affairs. Okay, if these people are called to Allah, they say, “By Allah, we do not know the truth by which we would be blamed for turning away from it?” We say it is possible that
a portion نصيبا
it is a great deal of knowledge, but they are arrogant. When they are called to the Book of Allah, it is possible that
a portion نصيبا
it is a little. Okay, if every meaning has a point, if we say “little,” the point of blame on them is that they were not given anything but a little knowledge, and it was obligatory for them to take hold of the knowledge to which they were called so that they would increase in knowledge. And if we say “much,” the point is: How do they know the truth? Because if they were given knowledge or a great portion of the Book, among its contents is that they know Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So how are they given the much knowledge by which the argument is established, and then they are arrogant toward it? So the verse is suitable for both aspects. His saying:
They are invited to the Scripture of Allah that it should arbitrate between them يدعون إلى كتاب الله ليحكم بينهم
[Ali 'Imran 3:23]
Who is the doer of
to judge ليحكم
? The doer of “to judge” is the Glorious Name and the Book, and both, meaning it is permissible for it to refer to Allah and to refer to the Book, is that so? Yes, because the Book judges, and likewise Allah, Mighty and Majestic, judges between His servants.

The Shaykh : Why do they turn away while they are averted? What is the reason that led them to that? Khalil?
The student: Arrogance,

The Shaykh : No, His saying, Exalted is He:
Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودات
[Ali 'Imran 3:24]
and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing. وغرهم في دينهم ما كانوا يفترون
[Ali 'Imran 3:24]
