Discussion regarding the verse: ((If they argue with you, say: I have submitted my face to Allah, and those who follow me...)).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed. Allah the Exalted said:
So if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted myself to Allah [in Islam], and [so have] those who follow me." فإن حاجوك فقل أسلمت وجهي لله ومن اتبعن
[Ali 'Imran 3:20]
We have previously discussed the beginning of this verse and stated that *al-muhajahah* (arguing) is debate and disputation, because each party presents their argument to overcome the other. The pronoun refers to those who were given the Scripture, based on His saying:
And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them وما اختلف الذين أوتوا الكتاب إلا من بعد ما جاءهم
[Ali 'Imran 3:19]
It may refer to them or to others, either by the indication of the wording or by the indication of semantic analogy. We mentioned that Allah commanded him, if they argued with him, to clarify that he had submitted his face to Allah, and that he speaks by the command of Allah and calls by the command of Allah, as do he and those who follow him. Allah commanded him to say, after establishing the proof for those who were given the Scripture and the *ammiyyun* (the Arabs),
Have you submitted أأسلمتم
We mentioned that there are two opinions among the scholars regarding this interrogative: either it means, "Do you have any understanding?" What does "understanding" mean? How is there any understanding? He mocks them after this clarity and warning: Have you submitted, or are you still upon what you are upon? Or, it is for the command, meaning, "Submit."
