Then Allah said about Moses: [Al-Ma'idah 5:25] Among the benefits of this noble verse is that Moses (peace be upon him) despaired of the Children of Israel when they defied him with this defiance and expressed it in this manner, as indicated by his saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:25]. Compare them, meaning the Children of Israel, with the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), who were eager to carry out his command and racing to do so. You will find the great difference between this nation—praise be to Allah—and the previous nations. Among the benefits of this noble verse is that Moses (peace be upon him) had authority over Aaron. He says: [Al-Ma'idah 5:25] As for whether he was older than Aaron, or whether Moses was older, this requires valid evidence, but Moses (peace be upon him) had command over Aaron. Among the benefits of this noble verse is the permissibility for a person to supplicate to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, to separate him from the people of open sinfulness and transgression, as indicated by his saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:25]. Can it be derived from this, or does it follow from this benefit, that boycotting the open sinners is permissible? Because boycotting is separation. It can be derived from this, but we say that the Sunnah indicates that if there is a benefit in boycotting, then do it; otherwise, do not do it. Among the benefits of this noble verse is that abandoning jihad in the path of Allah is open sinfulness, as indicated by his saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:25]. Should we say that among its benefits is taking the majority? Because among the Children of Israel, the people of Moses, those who were upon the truth were the two men who said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:23] Are they two open sinners? No, but considering the majority, it is correct to describe open sinfulness in a general sense. It may also be said that here is a general term intended for the specific, and that Moses (peace be upon him) did not at all intend to include the two men. Accordingly, the description here is specific to those who said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:24].
