The questioner : His final question says: If you have money and you buy a car or something similar with it, is zakah due on it or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The car that you bought with your money before the lunar year of the money had completed: if you bought it for trade and to earn a livelihood from it, meaning you bought it expecting to sell it for a profit, then it is merchandise for trade. If the lunar year of the money you bought it with has completed, it is obligatory for you to pay its zakah. You must appraise it at its value at the time zakah becomes due and give one-quarter of one-tenth of its value.
However, if you bought a car with money whose lunar year had not yet completed, and you bought this car to use it for yourself or to use it for hire, then there is no zakah on it, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
No Sadaqa is due from a Muslim on his slave or horse. ليس على المسلم في عبده ولا فرسه صدقة
Sahih Muslim 982a
.

The questioner : We received a message from Saleh Khalil al-'Ud from Manfuha.
