And in His saying:
(36) So when they came to Solomon, he said, "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift. (37) Return to them, for we will surely come to them with soldiers that they will be powerless to encounter, and we will surely expel them therefrom in humiliation, and they will be debased."
[Surah al-Naml: 36 - 37].
It is derived from His saying:
So when they came to Solomon
[Surah al-Naml: 36] that it is recommended that the leader of the delegation or the people should take the lead in speech or action, provided he is the one responsible for the action. The important thing is that the one who takes the lead is the leader, because it is not fitting for everyone to come forward at once, as this leads to the loss of responsibility. Therefore, one person must take the lead, and the more the matter is restricted to one person, the closer it is to understanding and achieving the intended purpose.
And in it is also: evidence for addressing the group, even if the one who takes the lead is their leader, based on His saying:
Do you support me with wealth
[Surah al-Naml: 36].
And in it is evidence for the permissibility of harshness in speech if there is a benefit in it, because this manner of Solomon (peace be upon him) is a strong style. As we said, the interrogative in His saying:
Do you support me أَتُمِدُّونَنِ
[Surah al-Naml: 36] is for reprimand and amazement, meaning that he is reprimanding them for their action and is amazed by their action. How do they offer him wealth when he is a king and is well-known and famous?
And in it is evidence for the permissibility of speaking about the blessings of Allah. The fourth benefit: It is permissible for a person to speak about the blessings of Allah, based on the saying of the Exalted:
What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you
[Surah al-Naml: 36].
But does he speak of this blessing by way of boasting, or by way of humility and acknowledging his need? We see that it depends on the situation.
So with an enemy, it is permissible to speak of it by way of boasting. Therefore, arrogance is permissible in war, even though arrogance is forbidden and is one of the major sins. But in war, to anger the enemy, there is no harm in it. So Solomon (peace be upon him) spoke here of the blessing of Allah by way of boasting, as it appears to me. Boasting over these people, and this is not a problem if it is in front of the enemy. But if it is to display the blessing, it is not permissible except by way of humility and acknowledging one's need for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), not by way of boasting and elevating oneself above the creation.
The fifth benefit: It is permissible for a person to describe another person by what appears of his state, based on His saying:
Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift.
[Surah al-Naml: 36]. For joy, as you know, is an internal matter, but its signs appear on the exterior of the body. However, in its essence, it is an internal matter, because the one who is joyful, the sound of his joy is not heard and no movement is seen for him, but its signs appear.
So there is no harm in a person judging another person by the indications of what appears of his state. Such a matter has passed before you many times. The man who had intercourse with his wife during the day of Ramadan said:
By Allah, I have not found a household poorer than mine
And yet, this man did not go around the houses of the people of the city and search them to know if there was anyone poorer than him.
