Reading from the author's text with commentary and collation of manuscripts: "The Seventh Aspect of the Sunnah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His servant and messenger, the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows:
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim* "The Seventh Aspect of the Sunnah is what was narrated by Kuraib, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them), who said
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her: On which days did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fast the most? She said: He used to fast on Saturday and Sunday more than on any other days, and he would say: 'They are the days of festival for the polytheists, so I love to differ from them.'
It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Abi 'Asim, and it is preserved from the hadith of 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, from 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn 'Ali, from his father, from Kuraib. Some of the scholars of hadith (huffaz) graded it as authentic. This is an explicit text regarding the prescription of differing from them in their festival, even if it is in the way of what is recommended. We will mention the hadith prohibiting fasting on Saturday, and the reasoning for that is also to differ from them. We will also mention the ruling on fasting it alone according to the scholars, and that they agree on the prescription of differing from them in their festival. They only differed on: Is differing from them on their festival day by fasting to differ from their action in it, or by neglecting it so that it is not intended for fasting or breaking the fast, or by distinguishing between the Arab festival and the non-Arab festival? As we will mention, if Allah wills."
