The reader: "And the origin of all of this is nothing but the exclusive observance of the festivals of disbelief with a new matter, or their imitation of them in some of their affairs. This is clarified by the fact that the week which falls at the end of their fasting is greatly honored by them; they call its Thursday 'Great Thursday' and its Friday 'Great Friday,' and they strive in worship therein in a manner they do not strive in any other time, similar to the last ten days of Ramadan in the religion of Allah and His Messenger. And the Sunday, which is the first day of the week, they fabricate a festival in it which they call 'Shu'aniyyun.' Some of them reported this about them, and some reported about them that 'Shu'aniyyun' is the first Sunday of their fasting, in which they go out with olive leaves and the like, and they claim that this is an imitation of what happened to Jesus (peace be upon him) when he entered the Holy Temple riding a donkey with its foal, so he enjoined good and forbade evil, then the rabble of the people rose up against him. The Jews had appointed some people with them who had sticks to strike him with, so those sticks sprouted leaves and those people prostrated to Jesus. Thus, the festival of 'Shu'aniyyun' is an imitation of that event, and it is what was named in the conditions of 'Umar and the books of jurisprudence: 'That they not display it in the abode of Islam.' They call this festival and every outing they make to the wilderness 'Ba'utha.' So 'Ba'utha' is a generic name for what is displayed by the religion, like the festival of breaking the fast and the sacrifice. As for what they narrate about Jesus (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) regarding miracles, it is within the realm of possibility; we do not deny them in it because of its possibility, nor do we affirm it because of their ignorance and open sinfulness.
