Regarding tayammum, is it obligatory that it be performed on pure earth, or is it permissible on a wall or on a bed?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : As for tayammum, is it obligatory that it be performed on pure earth, or is it permissible on a wall or on a bed?

The Shaykh : Yes, the wall is considered pure earth.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If the wall is built of earth, whether it is stone or mud brick, then it is permissible to perform tayammum on it. However, if the wall is covered with wood or paint, then if there is dust or dirt on it, he performs tayammum with it, and there is no harm, and it is like performing tayammum on the ground, because the dirt is from the substance of the earth. But if there is no dirt on it, then it is not of the earth in any way. If it has only paint on it and no dirt, then it is not of the earth.
As for the bedding, we say: if there is dust on it, let him perform tayammum on it; otherwise, he does not perform tayammum on it, because it is not of the earth.

The questioner : So how does he perform tayammum? Is it prepared for him in a vessel, for example?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is prepared, but according to the woman's question, they are not able to do that.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Rather, if it is possible, it is prepared for him.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
