The questioner : Is tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) permissible on stone or not? And is tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) permissible on the ground if there is rain on it? May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : Yes, tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) is permissible on the ground, whether it is sand or soil, dry or wet, and whether it is stones or not stones, due to the generality of the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):[An-Nisa 4:43] and due to the generality of the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 335.
And because Allah the Exalted knows that people are overtaken by prayer while they are in a rainy land or a stony land or otherwise, and likewise the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) knows this, yet he did not exclude anything of this type. This indicates the generality, and that when a person is overtaken by prayer, let him pray, performing tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) on whatever ground it is, and praying on whatever ground it is.
Except for what is ritually impure, for the ritually impure is not used for tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) nor is one prayed upon it, due to His saying (Mighty and Majestic):[An-Nisa 4:43] and one does not pray upon it because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered that water be poured on the urine of the Bedouin who urinated in the mosque. This indicates that the place upon which one prays must be pure.
The questioner : May Allah bless you, O honorable Shaykh.
The Shaykh : Yes, tayammum (dry ablution with clean earth) is permissible on the ground, whether it is sand or soil, dry or wet, and whether it is stones or not stones, due to the generality of the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
then seek clean earth
