Benefits of the Hadith: (Let a group of people stop raising their eyes to the sky during prayer...)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Now, in this hadith, there is a warning against raising the eyes to the sky during prayer, based on his saying:
or they would lose their eyesight أو لا ترجع إليهم
Sahih Muslim 428

One of its benefits is that raising the eyes to the sky during prayer is forbidden. In fact, if someone were to say that it is one of the major sins, his statement would not be far-fetched, because a warning was attached to it. The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differed on whether the prayer is invalidated if a person raises his eyes to the sky or not. The majority of scholars hold that the prayer is not invalidated. Some scholars, including the Zahiris, said that the prayer is invalidated because it is an action prohibited during prayer; just as the prayer is invalidated by speech, it is invalidated by raising the eyes to the sky. However, the correct opinion is that of the majority, that the prayer is not invalidated, but the man has committed a forbidden act and exposed himself to punishment.
One of the benefits of this hadith is the disapproval of those who, when they raise their heads from the bowing, raise their faces to the sky. This is an error. It is incumbent upon whoever sees them to advise them and clarify the matter to them, because they are ignorant and do not know, while you are knowledgeable. So convey the message, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Convey from me, even if it be an Ayah بلّغوا عنّي ولو آية
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2669Sahih (Darussalam)

If someone were to ask, the hadith says:
they raise their eyes يرفعون أبصارهم
What is your ruling if a person raises his face but closes his eyes? It appears that there is no difference, and that the phrase "they raise their eyes" is based on the most common occurrence, which is that when a person raises his face, he raises his eyes. Therefore, if he raises his face while his eyes are closed, he falls under the prohibition.
If someone were to ask, if he raises his eyes to the sky without raising his face, does the hadith cover him?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Read the hadith?
The student: Their eyes.

The Shaykh : Their eyes. So it appears that he falls under the hadith, even though the most common meaning is raising the eyes along with the face.
