The questioner asks: When is the time for al-talqin? Is it at the time of death, after death, or when he is placed in the grave, when the deceased is put in the grave and they put the dirt on him?

The questioner : He asks: When is the time for al-talqin? Is it at the time of death, after death, or when he is placed in the grave, when the deceased is put in the grave and they put the dirt on him, and the people gather around the grave, and the shaykh comes and recites verses from the Qur'an, and then he performs al-talqin at that moment? Is this permissible?

The Shaykh : Al-talqin is only done at the time of death, at the point of dying. One tells him to say "There is no god but Allah," as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did when his uncle Abu Talib was dying. He was present and said:
Say: La ilaha illallah, a word with which I will be able to defend you before Allah. قل يا عم: لا إله إلا الله كلمة أحاج لك بها عند الله
Sahih al-Bukhari 6681
But his uncle Abu Talib, may Allah protect us from that, did not say this and died upon shirk (associating partners with Allah).
As for al-talqin after burial, it is a bid'ah (religious innovation) because there is no established hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding it. However, what should be done is what Abu Dawud narrated, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he finished burying the deceased, would stand over him and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الأن يُسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
As for reciting at the grave or performing al-talqin, this is a bid'ah (religious innovation) and has no basis.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with the best reward.

The Shaykh : Yes, I mean at the grave. That is my intention. As for at the time of death, he is told to say it, as I said.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
