The questioner : She says she has a problem: she is a woman who has been married for nine years, and her problem is that her husband has prevented her from seeing her relatives and visiting them due to the distance of the place where they reside. She asked her husband to let her visit them before she had children, so he promised her he would after her first birth, but he did not keep his promise until she had four children. Even so, he keeps promising her and then breaking his word. She asks: on whom does the sin of severing family ties fall in this case? She has heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the effect that one who severs family ties will not enter Paradise?
The Shaykh : This hadith she referred to is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1909Sahih (Darussalam) meaning that one who severs family ties is valid, but this woman—let the questioner be reassured that she is not one who severs family ties. This is because her matter is in her husband's hand. If her husband prevents her or delays her in visiting her relatives, she bears no sin in this situation. She is commanded to obey her husband, as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: [An-Nisa 4:34] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that a woman with her husband is like a captive. Therefore, she bears no sin for not visiting her relatives as long as the prevention comes from her husband. However, I advise her husband to be good to her in his companionship, not to prevent her from visiting her relatives, and to strive to let her visit them, even if it is only from time to time, with a long interval between visits, given that the distance between him and her relatives is far. This is what is more appropriate and better for him, if Allah wills.
