My wife’s brother lives in the same city where I live, but my wife has refused to visit them due to the treatment her sister-in-law gives her and the lack of proper reception

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He has another question, O honorable Shaykh. He says: My wife’s brother lives in the same city where I live, but my wife has refused to visit them due to the treatment her sister-in-law gives her and the lack of proper reception. As for me, I visit them from time to time, and he also visits us without his wife. Is there a sin on my wife for this? And peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for a person to maintain family ties according to what custom requires, because maintaining family ties is among the best deeds that bring one closer to Allah. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has promised the family tie that He will maintain the one who maintains it and cut off the one who cuts it off. So your wife should maintain the tie with her brother according to what custom and habit require, and she should be patient with the harm caused by his wife, because patience in that is patience in obedience to Allah and patience with the painful decrees of Allah. Then, if she finds from her something that cannot be endured, let her excuse herself to her brother from attending the house. Her brother, without a doubt, will resolve the problem, either by reconciling between her and his wife, or by excusing her from attending his house. And as long as he—may Allah reward him with good—comes to his sister’s house and maintains the tie with her and visits her, then the intended purpose is achieved, or more than the intended purpose.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
