Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-01a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, saying: Malik informed us from Hisham ibn Urwah from his father from Aisha, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), that al-Harith ibn Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying:
"How does the inspiration come to you, messenger of God?" to which he replied, "It comes to me at times like the clanging of a bell, and that is the type which is most severe for me; it then leaves me, I having retained of it what the angel said. At times the angel appears to me in human form and speaks to me, and I retain what he says." `A'isha said she had seen the inspiration descending on him on a very cold day, and his forehead pouring with sweat when it left him.

The Shaykh : And this is evidence that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered from the intensity of the revelation, and Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. إنا سنلقي عليك قولا ثقيلا
[Al-Muzzammil 73:5]
.
And it descended upon him one day while his head was on the thigh of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman until he nearly bruised it, and this is part of what Allah commanded him to be patient with,
(23) Indeed, it is We who have sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Qur'an progressively. (24) So be patient for the decision of your Lord and do not obey from among them a sinner or ungrateful [disbeliever]. إنا نحن نزلنا عليك القرآن تنزيل فاصبر لحكم ربك
[Al-Insan 76:23-24]
and in this hadith, the revelation is divided into two categories:
The first category: that he hears something like the ringing of a bell, and then he is revealed to.
And the second: that the angel appears to him as a man and speaks to him, and he grasps what he says, and this is easy for him, because it is like ordinary conversation, and Allah the Exalted said in His Book:
And it is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a partition or that He sends a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills وما كان لبشر أن يكلمه الله إلا وحيا أو من وراء حجاب أو يرسل رسولا فيوحي بإذنه ما يشاء
[Ash-Shuraa 42:51]
so Allah the Exalted made clear that that is in three categories:
revelation, and the second: speaking from behind a veil, and the third: He sends a messenger and reveals by His permission what He wills, yes.
