The reciter: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions.
Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Chapter
Ibrahim ibn Hamzah narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us from Salih from Ibn Shihab from Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah that Abdullah ibn Abbas informed him, saying: Abu Sufyan informed me:
that Heraclius said to him, "I asked you whether they (followers of Muhammad) were increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were increasing. And in fact, this is the way of true Faith till it is complete in all respects. I further asked you whether there was anybody, who, after embracing his (the Prophets) religion (Islam) became displeased and discarded it. You replied in the negative, and in fact, this is (a sign of) true faith. When its delight enters the heart and mixes with them completely, nobody can be displeased with it."
Sahih al-Bukhari 51

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Al-Bukhari's statement: "Chapter," without mentioning a heading. The commentators said that he means this chapter is in the position of a section, like a section in books of jurisprudence and the like. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) write "Book" for the genus, "Chapter" for the species, and "Section" for the issues. For example, what do they refer to regarding purity?
They refer to it as the Book of Purity, prayer as the Book of Prayer, zakah as the Book of Zakah, fasting as the Book of Fasting, and so on.
And the species are referred to by chapters, for example, the Chapter of Lamentation, the Chapter of Vessels, the Chapter of Istinja', the Chapter of Wudu', and the like.
And the issues within the same chapter are written as a section, a section, meaning they separate the issues from one another. Sometimes they do not want to separate the issues from one another, but the discourse is long, so they fear boredom and write: "Section," because there is no doubt that if the discourse is separated, it becomes easier and lighter on the tongue.
When Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "Chapter," and does not mention a heading, this means that the chapter is a continuation of what preceded it, and that it is in the position of a section according to the jurists.
In this hadith, there is a witness to the increase of faith in his statement:
And in fact, this is the way of true Faith till it is complete in all respects وكذلك الإيمان حتى يتم
Sahih al-Bukhari 51
, "And so is faith until it is complete." Here, this evidence may be discussed, because Heraclius asked about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Do they increase or decrease? He did not ask about their laws which they are commanded to follow: do they increase or decrease?
Therefore, it is hidden from me that there is evidence in this hadith for what Al-Bukhari intended regarding the increase and decrease of faith. Perhaps the commentator will clarify for us if he has spoken on it.

The questioner : His statement: "Chapter, O Shaykh."

The Shaykh : Yes.
