Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-03b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Ahmad ibn Yunus and Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, saying: Ibn Shihab narrated to us from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib from Abu Hurayrah:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was asked, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad). The questioner then asked, "What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, "To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause." The questioner again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To perform Hajj (Pilgrim age to Mecca) 'Mubrur, (which is accepted by Allah and is performed with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure only and not to show off and without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet)."
Sahih al-Bukhari 26
.

The Shaykh : Yes, there is no doubt that action is part of faith. As for al-Bukhari's (may Allah have mercy on him) chapter: "Chapter on those who said that faith is action", the one who says this does not mean action without faith, mere action. Because if we said faith is action, the hypocrites would be believers, because they perform the actions of the believers. But the intent of the one who says this is that action is part of faith, that action is part of faith, and there is no doubt that action is part of faith.
And we have known previously that the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the community is that faith is speech and action, speech of the heart and tongue, and action of the heart, tongue, and limbs, and there is no doubt in this.
And as for His saying, the Exalted:
And that is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.
[Az-Zukhruf 43:72]
, it is said, yes, faith is part of action, because faith is the affirmation of the heart, and affirmation is a type of action, but it is the action of the heart. Then following that, or resulting from that, is the action of the limbs, such as establishing the prayer, giving zakah, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House.
And likewise His saying, the Exalted:
(92) So by your Lord, We will surely question them all (93) About what they used to do.
[Al-Hijr 15:92-93]
Yes, He will ask the person about what he did of good and evil, and He will also ask about other things,
Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.
[At-Takathur 102:8]
, so the questioning will be about several things, among which:
He will ask about his response to the messengers:
And [mention] the Day He will call them and say, "What did you answer the messengers?"
[Al-Qasas 28:65]
, and He will ask about shirk (associating partners with Allah):
the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"
[Al-Qasas 28:62]
, so he will be asked about tawhid (the oneness of Allah), the message, and all actions, including faith.
And it is mentioned that several scholars said regarding His saying, the Exalted:
(92) So by your Lord, We will surely question them all (93) About what they used to do.
[Al-Hijr 15:92-93]
, about the saying: "There is no god but Allah," and those who interpreted the verse with this specific action intend: "the saying of 'There is no god but Allah' and acting in accordance with its implications", not merely saying it with the tongue, because that does not benefit if the person does not act in accordance with its implications.
And his saying: "He was asked which deed is the best?" He said:
Faith in Allah and His Messenger.
, and in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud, he was asked: "Which deed is most beloved to Allah?" He said:
Prayer at its prescribed time
, he said: "Then what?" He said:
Dutifulness to parents
, he said: "Then what?" He said:
striving in the path of Allah
Sunan Abi Dawud 2486Hasan (Al-Albani)
, and here he says:
Faith in Allah and His Messenger.
, and as we mentioned recently in this gathering, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answers according to the state of the questioner, and by this, much confusion is removed from us regarding the hadiths where it is asked, "Which of these is better?" or "Which of these is good?" Then one person is answered with one thing, and another person is answered with another thing. Yes.
