Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-06b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Al-Hakam ibn Nafi' narrated to us, saying: Shu'ayb informed us from

The Shaykh : Also, we sometimes asked the students what is said, and he said: "Informed us," meaning: "So-and-so informed us, so-and-so informed us." It is necessary to say "informed us." He said: "So-and-so informed us," yes.
The reciter: He said: Shu'ayb informed us from al-Zuhri, saying: 'Amir ibn Sa'd narrated to me from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas that he informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Nothing you spend seeking Allah's pleasure but you shall get a reward for it, even for what you put in the mouth of your wife.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5668
.

The Shaykh : The point of interest is the generality
You will not spend any expenditure
, and "expenditure" is an indefinite noun in the context of negation, so it encompasses all expenditures,
You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah's sake even if it were a morsel which you put in your wife's mouth.
Sahih al-Bukhari 56
. The point of interest is his saying:
for Allah's sake
Sahih al-Bukhari 56

And his saying:
even for what you put in the mouth of your wife
Sahih al-Bukhari 5668
, some of the later scholars interpreted this to mean that a man takes a mouthful of food and puts it in his wife's mouth, and said that this is what is intended in the hadith. He justified this by saying that this necessitates affection between the man and his wife, if he is the one who takes the mouthful and feeds her. But this is certainly not intended, because the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is to be understood according to the custom of people.
And the meaning of
even what you put in your wife's mouth
is not understood by anyone to mean that a man takes a mouthful of food and puts it in his wife's mouth as if she were a child, who cannot eat except by being fed. Rather, the meaning is: even what you spend on your wife. But it is true that if this is something that necessitates gentleness and affection between the spouses, then there is no harm in doing it sometimes, yes, 'Abdullah.
