The Shaykh : We now return to deriving the benefits from the verse. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said: [Ghafir 40:18].
The following benefits are derived from this verse: The obligation of warning upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), based on His saying:. The default ruling for a command is obligation, especially since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is charged with this duty.
Among its benefits: It is recommended for the caller to be a source of fear at times and a source of glad tidings at other times. As for glad tidings at times, this is found in many verses: [Al-Baqarah 2:25] and the like. As for warning, it is likewise found in verses like this one. Therefore, the caller should be one who warns and gives glad tidings in order to move the hearts.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: It is recommended that in warning, people should be reminded of the conditions of the Day of Resurrection and its terrors, based on His saying:[Ghafir 40:18].
Among the benefits of the noble verse: The verse is close in time, based on His saying:. The closeness here means that time passes quickly until a person is not aware until the Resurrection has occurred, whether it is his own resurrection, which is called the minor Resurrection, or the general Resurrection.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: The explanation of this great depiction of the state of people on that day:[Ghafir 40:18].
Among the benefits of the noble verse: This state is general for both the believers and the disbelievers. The evidence for this is the generality of His saying: followed by His saying: [Ghafir 40:18]. This indicates that the verse is general. However, does the believers suffer from the evil of that day? No, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted: . Mere anxiety and sorrow do not necessarily entail evil or harm.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: The hearts, when fear is intense, rise until they reach the throats. This is attested to by reality. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said in Surat al-Ahzab:[Al-Ahzab 33:10]. A person himself also feels that when he is in great fear, it is as if his heart has hung in his throat.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: People on that day, despite the intensity of fear, will be filled with sorrow, based on His saying:. Sorrow (gham) is sadness or preparation for what is to come. Thus, sorrow is for the future, while anxiety (hamm) and sadness (huzn) are for the past.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: The severing of means for the wrongdoers, so they will find no close friend and no intercessor, based on His saying:[Ghafir 40:18]. The intended meaning of the wrongdoers is what was mentioned previously, namely the disbelievers.
If someone were to say: “Wrongdoing is broader than disbelief, so how did you interpret wrongdoing here as disbelief?” We would say: Because Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:254]. And because intercession is possible for sins less than disbelief, as intercession is established for the people of major sins from this Ummah.
Among the benefits of the noble verse: Warning these disbelievers of that day. For in this world, they find those who support them, ally with them, help them, and assist them, but in the Hereafter, they will find none of that.
And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Approaching Day
