Discussion of the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who was concealing his faith said: ‘Do you kill a man because he says, “My Lord is Allah,” while he has come to you with clear proofs from your Lord? And if he is a liar, then his lie is upon him; and if he is truthful, some of what he promises you will befall you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.’”

The Shaykh : And here we discuss what came before, his saying:
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faithوقال رجل مؤمن من آل فرعون يكتم إيمانه
[Ghafir 40:28]
How do you parse:
who was concealing his faith يكتم إيمانه
? Two positions are permissible: the first? A second or third attribute? A third.

The Shaykh : How is it permissible for it to be a state (hal) when the one it describes is an indefinite noun? And an indefinite noun does not have a state (hal) from it? As an attribute.
Why was he concealing his faith? Meaning, hiding it?
The student: Out of fear that they would kill him...

The Shaykh : Out of fear that they would kill him, because as long as they had threatened Musa with death, he feared for his own life, so he concealed his faith. Good.

The Shaykh : The saying of Allah the Exalted:
while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord وقد جاءكم بالبينات من ربكم
[Ghafir 40:28]
What is meant by the clear proofs? By the clear signs. Good. Signs of what? Why did the signs come with Musa?

The Shaykh : Why did he say:
but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you وإن يك صادقا يصبكم بعض الذي يعدكم
[Ghafir 40:28]
and not “all”? The meaning is the punishment of this world, not all punishment. Good.

The Shaykh : Why did this hesitation occur in his saying: “If he is” and “If he is,” even though he believes that he is truthful?
The student: First, it is a concession (tanazzul).

The Shaykh : To silence the opponent, that the situation is not free from one of the two matters. Yes, good.

The Shaykh : The saying of Allah the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar. إن الله لا يهدي من هو مسرف كذاب
[Ghafir 40:28]
How did He negate guidance when He may guide people like these?
The student: The negated guidance is the guidance of success (tawfiq), while the guidance of indication and direction is for everyone.

The Shaykh : Good, is there not among people one who is a transgressor and a liar, and Allah guided him?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : It does not contradict, but Allah says:
Indeed, Allah guides not إن الله لا يهدي
[Al-Ma'idah 5:51]
even though Allah may have guided a people who were transgressors and liars?
The student: If he remains in his transgression and lying, he is deprived of guidance, but as for one who repents and turns back.

The Shaykh : It does not contradict, but we say, let us leave this issue. This issue: Pharaoh remained in his disbelief until he perished, but others, a person may be a transgressor and a liar and then be guided.
Meaning, He does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar as long as he remains in that? The closest is that the meaning is Pharaoh, because we said in the previous discussion yesterday that the issue is either that he is a transgressor and a liar, so he cannot be guided, or that you are, so you cannot be guided. Another answer is to say that one whom Allah has decreed in eternity to be a transgressor and a liar, he will not be guided. This is a point we did not discuss yesterday, and therefore you are excused for the many statements you made.
