Explanation of the author's statement: And the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Indeed, Ibrahim was a nation, obedient to Allah, inclined toward truth, and he was not among those who associate partners with Allah."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
"
A *ummah* (nation) does not mean a group or a tribe; *ummah* means a leader, a leader, yes. It has passed us by, I think we mentioned to you that *ummah* in the Qur'an comes in four senses: a leader, an era, a group, and what else? A religion, or not?
Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion
[Az-Zukhruf 43:22]
On a religion
and remembered after a time وادكر بعد أمة
[Yusuf 12:45]
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
a leader
he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks] وجد عليه أمة من الناس يسقون
[Al-Qasas 28:23]
meaning a group. Good. He said:
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
This is praise from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for Ibrahim that he was a leader who is followed, peace and blessings be upon him. And that is because he is one of the noble messengers from those of resolve, so he is followed. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, is a model in his deeds, actions, and struggle. Yes, and he struggled against his people, and what happened to him from them happened. Then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) tested him with the command to slaughter his son, who was his only one. And he had reached with him the effort. What does "reached with him the effort" mean? It means he grew up and matured. He was not an old man whose soul had become attached to him, nor a young child to whom the soul was not much attached. He was at the peak of the soul's attachment to him, because when your child grows up, your soul becomes attached to him... If he is small, at least his love is not deeply rooted, but if he is with you and has reached the effort, he walks with him. This is the most precious thing to you of your children in this state. Allah tested him with this great trial, commanding him to slaughter his son with his own hand. A heavy, great command. Yes. Then he was also guided with a pious, obedient son to Allah, who said, "O my father, do what you are commanded." Why... his father and he rebels and runs away? He wanted to hasten... the command of his Lord. And this is from his dutifulness to his father and his obedience to his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He). He said, "O my father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." And this great strength, with reliance on Allah. "You will find me"—the *sin* indicates realization—but even so, he did not rely on himself, but sought help from Allah in his saying, "if Allah wills, among the patient." And they both complied and submitted and yielded to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and everything happened, and he fell prostrate on his forehead. Yes, "fell prostrate on his forehead" means on his forehead, on his brow, so that he would slaughter him while not seeing his face. Meaning it was difficult. But the relief came from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The knife did not turn, nor did his neck become iron, nor anything else. The relief came from the Lord (Mighty and Majestic).
(104) We called to him, "O Abraham, (105) You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
[As-Saffat 37:104-105]
This reality is taken as a model for him regarding patience with the command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Great patience with the command of Allah. Yes. One of us is commanded to destroy his wealth in obedience to Allah, and you find him turning red and yellow. The coin does not come out except by the will of Allah. How can he slaughter his son, the fruit of his heart, his only one, and he has no one? And it came to him in old age, yes. But he was a good servant. He was a nation, and at the same time, obedient to Allah. *Qunut* is the continuity of obedience and persistence in it. So he is obedient to Allah, steadfast in his obedience, maintaining it, peace and blessings be upon him, in every state. Just as our master Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, would remember Allah in all his states. In all his states, peace and blessings be upon him, he would remember Allah. If he stood, he remembered Allah. If he sat, he remembered Allah. If he slept, he remembered Allah. If he ate, he remembered Allah. If he relieved himself, he remembered Allah. In all his states. So, is he *qanit* or not? *Qanit* in the night and the day, peace and blessings be upon him.
devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth
[An-Nahl 16:120]
*Hanif*. What does *hanif* mean? It means turning away from shirk (associating partners with Allah), turning away from shirk, avoiding everything that contradicts obedience. So he was described with affirmation and negation, meaning with both the positive and negative descriptions.
and he was not of the polytheists." وما كان من المشركين
[Al-Baqarah 2:135]
Confirmation.
and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
Rather, he, peace and blessings be upon him, was protected from shirk. He did not associate partners with Allah, even though his people were associating partners with Allah. But he did not associate partners with Allah. He was not among those who associate partners with Allah. So Allah (the Exalted) sufficed him by preventing shirk, both in continuation and in beginning. Continuation in His saying:
as one who turns away from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and is upright in the tawhid (the oneness of Allah) of Allah حنيفا
And beginning in His saying:
and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
Many of the sincere servants of Allah associated partners with Allah and then established the oneness of Allah, is that not so? But from among the non-messengers, from among the non-messengers. As for the messengers, they were never associating partners with Allah. This is the realization of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), or not? Yes, it is the realization of tawhid. And the proof of that is that Allah made him a leader, and Allah does not make a leader for people who has not realized tawhid.
And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.
[As-Sajdah 32:24]
And there is no doubt that whoever reflects on the state of Ibrahim, peace and blessings be upon him, finds that he is at the highest of the levels of patience and the highest of the levels of certainty. Because no one is patient with these great matters except one who is certain of the reward. Yes, or not? The one who has doubt, if he hesitates, does not be patient with these things. Because the soul does not leave anything except for what is more beloved to it than it. It does not love anything except what it is certain of. And as for the one who has a problem with it, he does not strive for it.
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
We must know that the praise of Allah for one of His creations is not intended to reach us only the praise, but it is intended for two important things. One of them is loving this one whom Allah has praised. Just as one whom Allah has praised with evil, we hate and dislike him. For this reason, we love the angels... because they are standing in the command of Allah, glorifying night and day without ceasing. And we hate the devils because they are disobedient to Allah and enemies to us and to Allah. Yes. Similarly, here we love Ibrahim, peace and blessings be upon him, because he was a leader, obedient to Allah, inclined toward truth, and he was not among those who associate partners with Allah. Yes.
The second matter is that the purpose is for us to follow him in these attributes by which Allah praised him, because they are a place of praise, and we have from the praise according to what we have taken of them.
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding
[Yusuf 12:111]
So this issue is important, because the reality is that a person sometimes forgets the first issue, the first purpose, which is loving this one whom Allah has praised with good. But this should not be forgotten, because love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah are among the strongest ties of faith.
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[An-Nahl 16:120]
And He said, the Exalted, yes.
The student: ... some people...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: They say that Ibrahim searched...

The Shaykh : I seek refuge in Allah. He searched for the truth and associated partners with Allah, then established the oneness of Allah.
The student: Then established the oneness of Allah.

The Shaykh : The apparent meaning is that it is of the kind of what is said, "My journey from doubt to certainty." Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, it is.
The student: No, the one who...

The Shaykh : With me, and he said.
The student: No...

The Shaykh : And the chapter of the saying of Allah, and the chapter of the saying of Allah, meaning this chapter is as... he said, yes.
The student: Good, there is a saying that our master Isma'il did not disobey our master Ibrahim, because our master Ibrahim did not disobey his father. Because to whom it was said, "I will call upon our Lord that He may forgive you..." he disavowed him when.

The Shaykh : No, no, absolutely not. Rather, this is from the guidance of the Lord... Isma'il that he obeyed. They may not know this story.
The student: Ibrahim's father, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: Ibrahim's father.

The Shaykh : What is there?
The student: Did he die upon disbelief?

The Shaykh : He died upon disbelief.
The student: What is his name?

The Shaykh : Azar.
The student: Azar, yes.

The Shaykh :
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father Azar, "Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error."
[Al-An'am 6:74]
And He said, the Exalted:
And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him
[At-Tawbah 9:114]
Because he said
I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
[Maryam 19:47]
He promised him
But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.
[At-Tawbah 9:114]
Similarly, Ibrahim also said in Surat Ibrahim
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." ربنا اغفر لي ولوالدي وللمؤمنين يوم يقوم الحساب
[Ibrahim 14:41]
But afterwards he disavowed him. As for Nuh, he said:
My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women
[Nuh 71:28]
And we mentioned once that it indicates that the two fathers of Nuh were believers.
The student: The Sunnah... in the name of Ibrahim's father other than Azar.

The Shaykh : It is not correct, it is not correct.
The student: ...
The student: ... indicates that he has a name and a title.

The Shaykh : But this... needs a chain of narration, and where is the chain from the exegetes to Ibrahim, except if it is from the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And even if they agreed, even if they agreed, Imam Ahmad says: "Three things have no basis: *al-Maghazi* (biographies of the Prophet's campaigns), *al-Malahim* (accounts of battles), and *al-Tafsir* (exegesis)" The majority, the majority, they are mentioned without a chain of narration. Now you find few of the exegetes, for example, who explain His saying, the Exalted,
But when He gives them a good [child], they ascribe partners to Him
[Al-A'raf 7:190]
Few of the exegetes who deny the fabricated story about Adam and Hawwa. Few of them speak. So the important thing is that the matter... and I mentioned it before, it is obligatory for you to have evidence from the Qur'an that no one knows about the previous nations except through revelation.
Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them
[Ibrahim 14:9]
What?
No one knows them but Allah.
[Ibrahim 14:9]
