Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “But as for ‘Aad, they became arrogant in the land without right and said,” when they were warned of the punishment, “Who is stronger than us in power?”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
“
They said قالوا
When they were warned of the punishment
Who is greater than us in strength? مَن أشد منا قوة
[Fussilat 41:15]
”
meaning: no one. And
Whoeverمَن
here, the question is meant as negation and denial. We have repeated many times that when a question is meant as denial and negation, it is more emphatic than simple negation, because it contains a challenge.
Who is stronger than we in strengthمن أشد منا قوة
And
Whoeverمَن
as you know, is an interrogative pronoun, and
strongerأشد
is the predicate of the subject, because
Whoمن
is the subject and
strongerأشد
is the predicate of the subject, and
powerقوة
is the qualifier for
strongerأشد
. One of the general rules is that if a noun in the accusative case comes after a superlative noun, it is a qualifier.
Who is stronger than us in powerمَن أشد منا قوة
meaning no one. Then the author mentioned an example of their strength, saying: “One of them would uproot a great rock from the mountain and place it wherever he wished”. This example may be true or it may be an Israelite narrative, because it is known that ‘Aad were what?
The student: They carved.

The Shaykh : If carving is established, it is possible they could carry the mountain. Where is their location?
And mention, [O Muhammad], the brother of 'Aad, when he warned his people in the [region of] al-Ahqaf واذكُرْ أخَا عاد إذ أنذرَ قومه بالأحقاف
[Al-Ahqaf 46:21]
It is known that al-Ahqaf are all sand dunes, but in any case, whether this example is true or not, they were undoubtedly strong and fierce. So they said:
Who is stronger than us in powerمَن أشد منا قوة
Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, responded to them:
Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength أو لم يروا -أي يعلموا- أنَّ الله الذي خلقهم هو أشَدُّ منهم قوة
[Fussilat 41:15]
This is an affirmation that Allah the Exalted is stronger than they in power.
Did they not consider that Allah who created them أولم يروا أن الله الذي خلقهم
[Fussilat 41:15]
He did not say: “That Allah is stronger,” but rather said:
created them خلقهم
, to make clear their weakness and that they are created beings, and that the Creator will be stronger than they. The one who created them is stronger than they in power, because He is the one who gave them strength, and the Giver of perfection is more deserving of it. This is the wisdom behind His saying:
Allah who created them أنَّ الله الذي خلقَهم
[Fussilat 41:15]
He said:
But they were rejecting Our signs. وكانوا بآياتنا يجحدون
[Fussilat 41:15]
His statement:
But they were rejecting Our signs. وكانوا بآياتنا يجحدون
[Fussilat 41:15]
This is conjoined to His statement:
and they were arrogant in the land فاستكبروا في الأرض وقالوا
[Al-'Ankabut 29:39]
,
But they were rejecting Our signs. وكانوا بآياتنا يجحدون
[Fussilat 41:15]
He said: “By Our signs, the miracles”
deny يجْحدون
meaning they lie, because denial is lying and rejection, especially since it is transitive with the preposition “by” which indicates that. The author’s statement: “By Our signs, our miracles,” is questionable, because the signs are the indicators and pointers to the Creator, Mighty and Majestic, and are not miracles. We have mentioned that miracles come as signs, and also from the devils through sorcerers and others. But if we say “signs,” its meaning becomes indicators pointing to the truth.
But they were rejecting Our signs. وكانوا بآياتنا يجحدون
[Fussilat 41:15]
