The student: O honorable Shaykh, the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, narrating that the first son of Adam said, “If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you.” You mentioned that this is a ruling from those before us, and that our ruling came in contradiction to it. Will this apply in our ruling regarding fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), O Shaykh?
The Shaykh : Yes, this involves fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), but the matter of Qabil and Habil did not involve fitnah. For this reason, the Messenger ordered that when fitnah occurs, a person should be like the best of the two sons of Adam, restraining himself, just as Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did when the rebels rose up against him. The Companions wanted to defend him, but he ordered them to hold back.
