Discussion of the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Indeed, those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remain steadfast—angels descend upon them, saying, ‘Do not fear and do not grieve, and rejoice in the [Paradise] that you were promised”

The Shaykh : So, I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah " and then remained on a right course - the angels will descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve إنَّ الذين قالوا ربنا الله ثم استقاموا تتَنَزَّلُ عليهم الملائكة ألا تخافوا ولا تحزنوا
[Fussilat 41:30]
When does this descent take place?
The student: In every state, including at the time of death.

The Shaykh : Yes, in every state where they need support and steadfastness, and especially at the time of death. Now, this is attested by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed إذ يوحي ربك إلى الملائكة أنِّي معكم فثَبِّتُوا الذين آمنوا
[Al-Anfal 8:12]
. He expressed it with the word
descendتتنزل
rather than
descentتنزل
. Why?
The student: For two reasons: the first is the gradualness of the descent, and the second is: .. repetition ..

The Shaykh : Good, well done. His saying:
receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.
[Fussilat 41:30]
Sa'd! What is the good news?
The student: Encouraging people with what is desirable?

The Shaykh : Informing about what?
The student: What brings joy.

The Shaykh : Good, and does it come for anything else?
The student: Yes, it comes with what brings sorrow; it may sometimes come with what brings sorrow.

The Shaykh : An example? Ahmad!
The student:
Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment -
[An-Nisa 4:138]

The Shaykh :
Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment -
[An-Nisa 4:138]
Well done. Now, is this good news in its literal meaning, or is something else intended by it, Ahmad?
The student: It is intended to torment them.

The Shaykh : It is mockery; it is intended as mockery, like the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(48) Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water." (49) [It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!
[Ad-Dukhan 44:48-49]
This is called mockery within it. Yes,
We [angels] were your allies in worldly life and [are so] in the Hereafter
[Fussilat 41:31]
How were they their allies in worldly life?
The student: Their allies in worldly life helped them to do good deeds and warned them against doing evil deeds.

The Shaykh : Yes, is there anything in the hadith that attests to this?
The student: .. The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed, the Shaytan has a whisper and the angel has a whisper
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 65:74

The Shaykh : Well done. Now, I think we stopped at his saying:
and you will have therein whatever you request [or wish] ولكم فيها ما تدعون
[Fussilat 41:31]
?
The student: We have not taken the benefits yet, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes, let us complete the verse now.
