Continuation of the commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: “And when We bestow a favor upon man” (the species) “he turns away” from gratitude “and turns his back on it” by twisting his neck in arrogance.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He, Mighty and Majestic, says:
And when We bestow favor upon the disbeliever, he turns away and distances himself
[Al-Isra 17:83]
The author says in his tafsir:
he turned his back on it نأى بجانبه
“That is, he twisted his neck in arrogance” meaning he turned away with his body and his heart, boasting and magnifying himself. This is regarding his state; regarding what is required of him in terms of gratitude: he turns away and does not thank Allah, Mighty and Majestic. This is the state of many of the children of Adam, and for this reason Allah generalized it, saying:
And when We bestow favor upon the
[Al-Isra 17:83]
, because most of the children of Adam are in this state. And his saying:
turned his back نأى
I have in my copy “
turned his backناء
turned his back on it, and in a reading with the hamza moved forward”
in a reading from the seven canonical readings. And know that the convention of the author (may Allah have mercy on him) is that when he says: “and in a reading” it is from the seven canonical readings, and when he says: “and it was read” it is from the anomalous readings. So
turned his backناء
and
turned his backنأى
have the same meaning as
A’isa
and
ya’isaيَئِسَ
with the hamza moved forward or backward, and their meaning is the same. “A’isa” from such a thing and “ya’isa” from such a thing have the same meaning. “Na’a” with such a thing or “na’a” with such a thing have the same meaning. The point is that, as the author said, he twisted his neck and turned away in arrogance and magnification.
and when evil touches him
[Al-Isra 17:83]
he turned toward
then he is full of extensive supplication.
[Fussilat 41:51]
meaning much. When evil touches him, he turns to Allah, prolongs his supplication, and increases in it. And look at what Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has related about the polytheists when they were in the sea and the sea became rough:
supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful."
[Yunus 10:22]
but they make promises and lie. When He saves them, they return to disbelief, refuge with Allah from that.
