Ships are numerous and beyond counting. For this reason, He said: Considering the many ships that sail upon the sea, or perhaps we may say considering the single ship, in terms of the great signs observed by its passengers at sea that point to the perfection of Allah’s power. For this reason, those who go out to sea to catch fish tell us of the wonders they observe in the fish, with their differences in species, their differences in size, large and small, and their shapes, which are among the greatest of Allah’s signs.
[Ibrahim 14:5] “Patient” is an intensive form, meaning one who is much in patience; “grateful” means one who is much in gratitude. So what is the connection between patience and gratitude? The connection is clear, for if these ships sail as they should, the human being’s duty is gratitude, and if they sail as they should not, his duty is patience. Thus, both the patient and the grateful one will see in these ships, from Allah the Exalted and Majestic, signs that make them certain that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is capable of all things, and that He is Merciful to the servants, and other things that they will see.
He said: “He is the believer who is patient in hardship and grateful in ease”. It may be said: the believer and the disbeliever. But the disbeliever is patient and does not give thanks. The believer is patient and gives thanks; he is patient in the place of patience and grateful in the place of gratitude. The disbeliever is patient in the place of patience and endures, but he does not give thanks in the place of gratitude; rather, he increases in arrogance and transgression.
