The Shaykh : He said: "And his saying:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased قُلْ إِنْ كَانَ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَاؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَالٌ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُمْ
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
"
How many are these? Eight.
If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
Eight.
are more beloved to you أحب إليكم
All of these eight are in the nominative case; the first is the subject of *kana* (was), and the rest are conjoined to it, and the predicate of *kana* is
more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
to the end of the verse. The address in his saying:
Say قل
is to whom? To the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And the one addressed in his saying:
your fathers آباؤكم
is the Ummah (the Muslim community)
Say, [O Muhammad], "If your fathers قل إن كان آباؤكم
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
to the end of it. And his saying:
are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
And his saying:
then wait فتربصوا
is a command verb intended as a threat, and the meaning of "wait" is to await the punishment of Allah. For this reason, he said:
until Allah delivers His command
[Al-Baqarah 2:109]
meaning by His command to destroy those who preferred the love of these eight categories over the love of Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause,
and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:108]

From this verse, we derive what the author intended: Is this love for these eight categories in this verse from which of the two types? From the love of worship or from other than worship?
The student: Other than worship.

The Shaykh : Other than worship, and yet, look, if it is preferred over the love of Allah, it becomes a cause for punishment. That is, if your fathers are more beloved to you than Allah. And by what do we know that the father is more beloved to a person than Allah? If he neglects the commands of Allah for the commands of his father, that is the sign. Correct, we do not know what is in the hearts, but everything in the heart has a witness in the limbs. It is narrated from al-Hasan, I think he said: "No one conceals a secret except that Allah the Exalted reveals it on the pages of his face and the slips of his tongue." What is in the heart must appear; the limbs and words are like a mirror for the heart. We know that you love your father or not because you prioritize it over what Allah loves. Now, if someone says that love is in the heart and a person cannot control it, for this reason it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
O Allah, this is my division concerning what I control, so do not blame me concerning what You control and I do notاللهم هذا قسمي فيما أملك; فلا تلمني فيما لا أملك
Sunan Abi Dawud 2134
How is it possible for a person to love something while he hates it? Is this not an attempt to make the impossible possible? The answer is that this objection is not valid, for a person loves what he hates without doubt, and his love turns into hatred, either due to apparent causes or due to a compelling will. He has a determination to love this and hate that. You are a friend of this man and love him, but one day he says, "You stole from me and violated the honor of my family." What happens to the love? It turns into hatred due to an apparent cause. And sometimes it is due to strong determination. A man associates with a man of evil and an open sinner, and he loved him, but he brought harm upon himself: how can I love this man? And he determined upon himself until he hated him. Is that possible or not?
The student: It is possible.

The Shaykh : It is possible. A man gets accustomed to something he loves, such as smoking, for example. He loves this, and do smokers love him or not? Hmm?
The student: No, they do not love him.

The Shaykh : They love him. No, they love him. But he developed a strong determination, so he hated it and left it. Is that possible? It is possible. I gave you this example in tangible things, and I will explain it to you in matters of information coming from the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law). 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than
The student: Than my wealth and my children.

The Shaykh : My wealth and my children.
I love you more than everything except myself
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:206
I love you more than everything except myself
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 16:206
Look, he made an exception because he was explicit, (may Allah be pleased with him).
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And your self?" He said: "Now, now" فقال النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام : ومن نفسك، قال : الآن الآن
Look.
Now, by Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything, even my own self
Did the love change or not?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : And what is the evidence? Now, there is no doubt that 'Umar was truthful and did not say that out of hypocrisy. If he had wanted to be a hypocrite, he would not have said it at first except from his own soul. So he was truthful, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved him, confirming that love can change and transfer. And this is correct: love changes and transfers, and it increases and decreases. Perhaps I hear something attributed to a person, and I love him and he is in a high position with me, so I hate him. And this, of course, has a cause. And when the matter becomes clear to me and that what was attributed to him is a lie, the original love returns, or even more. Is that not so? So, a person can control love, either by an apparent cause or by a compelling determination. It is true that there is difficulty in loving what you hate, but with determination or with causes, along with deliberation and reason, hatred can turn into love, or love into hatred. And this is a clear matter. Now, the noble verse:
If your fathers
[At-Tawbah 9:24]
means the father in the direct line. The father in the direct line, or even the grandfather? Even the grandfather. And your sons are the same. Yes, the son and his son, and so on down. And your brothers in the direct line. A full brother, or a brother on the father's side, or a brother on the mother's side.
This report agrees with reality, due to his saying:
And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
[As-Saf 61:5]
.

The questioner : O Shaykh, the stronger position in it is...

The Shaykh : By Allah, it is possible for all their meanings, as they do not contradict each other, for if they deviate and remain in open sinfulness, the wisdom of Allah forbids that He guide them.
