One who leads the prayer without ablution and remembers during the prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother S. A. M. (may Allah keep him safe).
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. And after:
I refer to your inquiry, registered with the Department of Scientific Research under number (2954) on 16/9/1406 AH, in which you ask about an imam of a mosque who was not in a state of ablution when he prayed, but he did not realize it until after the second rak'ah of the prayer. However, he completed the prayer. When the prayer ended, he stood up and performed ablution. What is the ruling regarding the prayer of the followers? Is it valid, or must they repeat their prayer? And if a sound was heard from him while he was in prayer, and some of the followers heard it, and after the end of the prayer the imam stood up and performed ablution, what is the ruling regarding the prayer of the followers in that case?
A: I inform you that if the imam remembers during the prayer that he is not in a state of ablution, it is forbidden for him to continue the prayer. If he continues until the end of the prayer and the followers do not know about it, then their prayer is valid, but his own prayer is invalid; due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
They pray for you, so if they do well, it is for you and for them, and if they do wrong, it is for you and upon them.يصلون لكم فإن أحسنوا فلكم ولهم وإن أساءوا فلكم وعليهم
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 6:46
.
As for if the followers know that the imam's ablution has been broken and they follow him in the prayer, then the prayer of those among them who knew that the imam's ablution had been broken and continued to follow him is invalid, and they must repeat it.
May Allah guide everyone to what He is pleased with, and peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
