The Ruling on One Who Limits Himself to the Friday Prayer and Fasting Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Many people do not pray except on Fridays and during Ramadan, and they cite the hadith:
Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous oneالجمعة إلى الجمعة ورمضان إلى رمضان مكفرات لما بينهما
Mishkat al-Masabih 564
Is this a valid practice?

A: This argument is ignorance and misguidance. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has made obligatory upon us the five daily prayers, He has made obligatory upon us the Friday prayer, and He has made obligatory upon us fasting Ramadan. So we must perform all the obligatory duties and avoid what Allah has forbidden. We must perform all the prayers, perform the Friday prayer, fast Ramadan, perform Hajj to the House, and do everything Allah has made obligatory upon us. We must avoid what Allah has forbidden us, hoping for His reward and fearing His punishment. In doing so, we will have a great reward and a good outcome. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed out in the same hadith what we have mentioned, by saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The five (daily) prayers and from one Friday prayer to the (next) Friday prayer, and from Ramadhan to Ramadhan are expiations for the (sins) committed in between (their intervals) provided one shuns the major sins.الصلوات الخمس والجمعة إلى الجمعة ورمضان إلى رمضان مكفرات ما بينهن ما اجتنبت الكبائر
Sahih Muslim 233c
.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that these acts of worship serve as expiation for the minor sins committed between them, provided the servant avoids major sins. This demonstrates the invalidity of what the questioner assumed regarding the expiation Allah has established for them. It clarifies that these acts of worship serve as expiation for what occurs between them only for those who fulfill the obligatory duties and avoid major sins. This meaning is indicated by the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He):
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
[Al-Nisa: 31]. In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) clarified that the expiation of sins and entering Paradise are contingent upon avoiding major sins. These are the transgressions for which the texts contain warnings of the curse, or the Fire, or the anger of Allah , or the denial of faith for their perpetrator, or the disavowal of Allah from them, or the disavowal of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the like of what indicates their greatness and danger. For example, his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
May Allah curse the thief! He steals an egg and his hand is cut off, and he steals a rope and his hand is cut offلعن الله السارق يسرق البيضة فتقطع يده ويسرق الحبل فتقطع يده..
Sunan Ibn Majah 2583Sahih (Darussalam)
the hadith. He (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who drinks intoxicants, the one who serves them, the one who brews them, the one who presses them, the one who carries them, the one to whom they are carried, the one who sells them, the one who buys them, and the one who eats their price. Similarly, he (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who eats riba (usury or interest), the one who gives it, the one who writes it, and its two witnesses. Similarly, he (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who plucks eyebrows, the one who has them plucked, the one who joins hair, and the one who has hair joined... the hadith. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
An adulterer, at the time he is committing illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer; and a person, at the time of drinking an alcoholic drink is not a believerلا يزني الزاني حين يزني وهو مؤمن، ولا يشرب الخمر حين يشربها وهو مؤمن...
Sahih al-Bukhari 5578
the hadith. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).أنا بريء من الصالقة والحالقة والشاقة
Sahih Muslim 104a
agreed upon for its authenticity. The "saliqah" is the one who raises her voice in grief, the "haliqah" is the one who shaves her hair in grief, and the "shaqqah" is the one who tears her clothes in grief. There are many hadiths in this meaning.
All Muslims have unanimously agreed that fasting Ramadan does not drop the other obligatory duties from Muslims, and that the Friday prayer does not drop the other obligatory duties either. They agreed that the Friday prayer does not drop the remaining prayers, but it only drops the Zuhr prayer on the day of Friday. So, if someone claims that the Friday prayer and fasting Ramadan drop all these obligatory duties from him and believes that, this is disbelief and misguidance according to all scholars. The one who says this must hasten to repent to Allah from that; because this is dropping obligatory duties and making permissible what is forbidden, and that is the height of disbelief and misguidance. And speaking about Allah without knowledge—we ask Allah for safety and well-being from that.
