A woman afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder regarding cleanliness and fear of ritual impurity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A question from: A. H - She says: I am afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder regarding cleanliness and fear of ritual impurity, meaning: I wash my hands and clothes several times before I am convinced of their cleanliness. I tried to force myself to overcome this obsession, but I could not; I sometimes succeed and often fail. I am a believer and I fear Allah greatly, and I supplicate to Allah much in my prayer and standing in prayer that He cure me of what I am in. I know that this is an illness and I have read that one must not pay attention to this obsession, but I am unable to do so. I want to know the opinion of the religion regarding this illness, especially since it makes me a person who is extravagant in the use of water. And with what should I supplicate so that I may be rid of this obsession? And is it true that supplication during prostration must be in voluntary prayer and is not permissible in obligatory prayer? I ask for your guidance, and may you have abundant thanks.

A: You must be cautious of obsessive thoughts, leave acting upon them, seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, and base your ablution and prayer on your assumption, turn away from the obsessive thoughts, ask Allah for well-being from them, and increase seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. By doing so, you will be safe from them, if Allah wills, you will frustrate Shaytan, and you will please your Lord, Glorified and Exalted is He. I ask Allah for well-being and safety for us and for you from the schemes and obsessive thoughts of Shaytan.
Supplication is prescribed for the Muslim man and woman in obligatory and voluntary prayer; in prostration, and at the end of the tashahhud before the taslim; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.أقرب ما يكون العبد من ربه وهو ساجد؛ فأكثروا الدعاء
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.فأما الركوع فعظموا فيه الرب وأما السجود فاجتهدوا في الدعاء فقمن أن يستجاب لكم
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
Muslim narrated both in his Sahih, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) when he taught his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) the tashahhud - I mean: the tahiyyat - he said to them:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it.ثم ليتخير أحدكم من الدعاء أعجبه إليه فيدعو
Sunan Abi Dawud 968Sahih (Al-Albani)
It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
And success is from Allah.
