The Ruling on Zakah in a Debt Deferred in Installments
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: His Eminence, the Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, may Allah preserve him. Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
I hope you will be gracious enough to answer this inquiry, may Allah reward you, which is:
A man sold a house on an installment basis. He received part of the value, and the remaining amount (480) thousand is due in monthly installments, with each installment being nine thousand riyals. Two years have passed since the sale, and the man is regular in his payments.
The seller asks: Does he have to pay zakah on the remaining amount in the debtor’s possession? And does he have to pay zakah for this year or for the previous years along with this year?
A: And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
The owner of the aforementioned amount must pay its zakah when the lunar year is completed. Whoever has completed a lunar year and has not paid his zakah must pay the zakah for the time that has passed. And success is from Allah, and peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
