Zakah on the Past and the Present
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 14228 )
Q: I sold my inheritance from my father to my full brother for a sum of (one hundred thousand riyals). I took ten thousand of it at the time of the sale, and the remaining (90,000) is to be paid in installments over nine years, ten thousand each year. I have already received six installments totaling sixty thousand, and he still owes me thirty thousand. What is required: Do I pay zakah on the past and the present, or how should I proceed? I have not paid any zakah on it at all. What I would like you to do is send my question to the appropriate authority so that I may be given what will clear my conscience; for I fear punishment for myself. May you remain well.
A: There is no zakah on the installment you received at the time of the sale contract if you spent it before the completion of the lunar year. As for the other deferred installments, zakah is due on them, one-fifth of a tenth each year, which is equivalent to two and a half percent (2.5%).
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
