Offering the Recitation of the Qur'an to Others

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Is it permissible for me to complete a recitation of the Noble Qur'an for my parents, knowing that they are illiterate and neither read nor write? Is it permissible for me to complete a recitation of the Qur'an for a person who knows how to read and write, but I wish to offer this recitation to him? And is it permissible for me to complete a recitation of the Qur'an for more than one person?

A: There is no indication in the Noble Book, nor in the pure Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor from his noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that it is prescribed to offer the recitation of the Noble Qur'an to one's parents or to anyone else. Rather, Allah has prescribed the recitation of the Qur'an for benefiting from it, gaining profit from it, reflecting on its meanings, and acting upon it. Allah the Exalted said:
[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
[Surah Sad: 29] And Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable
[Surah Al-Isra: 9] And He, the Exalted, said:
Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure."
[Surah Fussilat: 44] And our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It.
Sahih Muslim 804a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
On the day of resurrection the Qur’ān and those who acted according to it will be brought with sūra al-Baqara and Āl ‘Imran preceding them* like two black clouds or canopies with light between them, or as though they were two flocks of birds in ranks pleading for the one who recited them.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2121
.
The point is that it was revealed to be acted upon, reflected upon, worshipped through its recitation, and read frequently, not to be offered to the dead or others. I do not know of any reliable basis for offering it to one's parents or to anyone else. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718b
.
Some scholars have held that it is permissible, saying: There is no harm in offering the reward of the Qur'an and other righteous deeds, and they analogized this to charity and supplication for the dead and others. However, the correct view is the first one; due to the aforementioned hadith and what came in its meaning. If offering the recitation had been prescribed, the righteous Salaf would have done it. And worship does not allow for analogy; because it is based on divine text and is not established except by an explicit text from the speech of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) , or from the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), due to the aforementioned hadith and what came in its meaning.
As for charity on behalf of the dead and others, and supplication for them, and performing Hajj on behalf of someone who has already performed Hajj for himself, and likewise performing 'Umrah on behalf of someone who has already performed 'Umrah for himself, and likewise making up fasting for someone who died with fasting owed to him, all these acts of worship are supported by authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), provided that the person for whom Hajj or 'Umrah is performed is dead or unable due to old age or an illness that is not expected to end. And success is from Allah.
