The Description of the Funeral Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I hope you will clarify how to perform the funeral prayer as established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); because many people are ignorant of it?
A: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) have explained the description of the funeral prayer. It is to say the takbir first, then seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan, mention Allah, and recite al-Fatihah and a short surah or some verses. Then he says the takbir and sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) just as he does at the end of the prayer. Then he says the third takbir and makes du'a for the deceased. The best is to say: All of this is preserved from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And if he makes du'a for him with other supplications, there is no harm, such as saying: Muwatta Malik 16:18. Then he says the fourth takbir and stands for a short while, then he says the salam once to his right, saying: (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah).
It is recommended (sunnah) for the imam to stand at the head of a man and at the middle of a woman; because this is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Anas and Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with them both). As for the statement of some scholars that the sunnah is to stand at the chest of the man, that is a weak statement with no evidence for it, as far as we know. The deceased should be facing the qiblah when the prayer is performed over him; because of the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the Ka'bah: And success is from Allah.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, whomever You keep alive among us, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon faith. O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his residence and widen his entrance. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. O Allah, replace his home with a better home and his family with a better family. O Allah, admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not misguide us after him.
O Allah, if he acted well, then increase for him his good action, and if he acted wrongly, then overlook his wrong actions.
