Attending the funeral prayer in a mosque after having already prayed the obligatory prayer: what should one do?

Q: Some of the worshippers come to the mosque having already prayed the obligatory prayer in their own mosques. When the obligatory prayer is established in the mosque where the funeral prayer will be performed, should they pray with the Muslims a second time, or should they sit in the mosque and wait for them? And what about the one who arrived late and missed three rak'ahs; should he pray with them despite his fear of missing the funeral prayer?

A: If a Muslim comes to the mosque and finds the people praying, it is prescribed for him to pray with them, for it is a voluntary prayer for him. This is based on what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to Abu Dharr: And two men were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in Mina during the Farewell Pilgrimage; they had not prayed with him in the Fajr prayer. He said to them: They said, “We have already prayed in our tents, O Messenger of Allah.” He said to them: There are many hadiths on this topic, and they indicate that whenever a Muslim catches up with the imam in the prayer, or part of it, he should pray with him, and it will be a voluntary prayer for him.
