The Amount of Zakah in Eighty-Five Grams of Gold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I own eighty-five grams of gold. What is the amount of zakah? Please guide me on this matter. May Allah reward you with good.

A: Zakah is one-quarter of one-tenth. So, in forty pounds, it is one pound. If you own eighty-five grams, then according to the most correct view, it is slightly less than the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah). If you pay the zakah on it as a precaution, that is because some scholars say that eighty-five grams reaches the nisab. We have calculated this and found that the nisab is ninety-two minus a small fraction, meaning twenty mithqals, which is eleven and a half Saudi pounds. If your gold reaches this amount, eleven and a half Saudi pounds, then pay its zakah, which is one-quarter of one-tenth, meaning one pound from every forty pounds, and half a pound from twenty pounds; this is one-quarter of one-tenth. As for eighty-five grams, according to our calculation, it is less than the nisab. If you pay its zakah as a precaution, that is good.
