The Ruling on Zakah in Onions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: From Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz to the honorable A. M. (may Allah keep him safe). Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. And after that:
I refer to your inquiry, registered with the Department of Scholarly Research and Ifta under number 483 and dated 5/2/1408 AH, in which you ask about the obligation of zakah on the onions produced by your farm, and on the truck you use to transport goods.

A: I inform you that there is no zakah on onions unless you intend to trade in them and a lunar year has passed over them, or a lunar year has passed over their price and it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah), in which case zakah is due on them. The same applies to a car or the like if it is intended for trade.
As for delaying the payment of zakah beyond its time, it is not permissible except for a legitimate Shari'ah interest. You must repent and seek forgiveness for the past delays, and not return to doing so again.
May Allah guide everyone to what brings Him pleasure. And peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.

Scientific, Ifta, Da'wah, and Guidance
