The Ruling on Zakah on Gold for Past Years
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: From Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, to the honorable / A. A. G. -may Allah keep him safe-
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
I refer to your inquiry, registered with the Department of Scientific Research and Ifta under number 3625, dated 15/9/1407 AH, in which you ask about the obligation of zakah on women's jewelry, whether your wife is required to pay zakah on the jewelry she sold without knowing its weight in grams, and whether she is required to pay zakah for the years that have passed.
A: I inform you that if she sold it while not knowing that zakah was obligatory on it, she is not required to pay zakah on it. The loan she has with her father does not require her to pay zakah on it if her father is unable to pay. However, if he is wealthy and generous, she must pay zakah on it every year. She is not required to pay zakah on it for the past years, provided she did not know that zakah was obligatory on the jewelry until the present time. May Allah guide everyone to what He is pleased with. And may peace and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.
