Zakah on Jewelry for Its Owner
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: My wife has gold jewelry that she wears, and it reaches the nisab. Is there zakah on it? Is it obligatory for me or for my wife to pay its zakah? And is the zakah paid out of the jewelry itself, or is it valued at its equivalent worth and zakah is paid based on that?
A: Zakah is obligatory on jewelry of gold and silver if its weight reaches the nisab, which is twenty mithqals of gold and one hundred and forty mithqals of silver. The amount of the gold nisab in current currency is eleven Saudi pounds and three-sevenths of a pound. If the gold jewelry reaches this amount or more, zakah is obligatory on it, even if it is worn, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions.
The amount of the silver nisab in Saudi riyals is fifty-six riyals. If the silver jewelry reaches this amount or more, zakah is obligatory on it.
The zakah is one-quarter of a tenth of gold, silver, and trade goods, which is two and a half percent, or twenty-five per thousand, and so on for any amount exceeding that.
The zakah is the responsibility of the owner of the jewelry. If her husband or someone else pays it on her behalf with her permission, there is nothing wrong with that. It is not obligatory to pay the zakah out of the jewelry itself; rather, it is sufficient to pay it out of its value, whenever the lunar year of possession completes, according to the value of gold and silver in the market at the completion of the year.
And success is from Allah.
